Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Cathy's Tales from her Camino Santiago Walk for Polio

By now you know that I'm back. My Camino walk is over and there is just one thing left for me to do. Say "Muchas Gracias!!"  Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement. Without your participation, this would have been just another hike; another walk in the woods. But because of your response  we have succeeded in going over the goal and raising more than $2,000.00 for the eradication of Polio. Matched with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funds, that is over $6,000.00! I am so touched, but not surprised, by your generosity. A very special thanks goes to Robin Milam for putting together the campaign on Giving Trail and for keeping you posted on my progress.

As you probably know my walk was dedicated in honor of Sam Dardick; a friend and colleague afflicted by Polio at a young age. Although confined to a wheelchair, Sam never let anything stop him. He was a great example of someone "Making a Difference."  If you haven't seen his son Caleb's video on Giving Trail, please take a minute to check it out. What an inspiration. It was also an honor to walk the Camino so that others might be spared the horrors of Polio and will be able to walk. It was an experience of a lifetime and your support made it even better. We are "____" this close; only a few countries left. We will do it. When I got to the 0 km Camino marker in Finisterre you were all there with me; let's cross this next 0 marker together. I'll be sharing my experience on the Camino this Thursday. Muchas Gracias y hasta pronto.

Cathy's Make History Today

For those who were waiting proof that she completed her trek, you have it now! We exceeded $2000!  If you have not yet donated, celebrate with Cathy now! Even a few dollars puts you on the donor list supporting Cathy.  We have exceeded her goal and would love to go to $3,000.  We will keep the campaign open through World Polio Day on October 24. Donate and/or follow Cathy's End Polio Now trek with all her updates Make History Today ~ End Polio Once and For All! (link is external)

Cathy dedicated her Camino walk to Sam Dardick.  If you have not seen the expanded video of Caleb sharing stories of growing up with his amazing father, please visit and scroll to the August 1 update. (link is external)

Last Week Social Mixer:  Chris Newsom Craft Talk and Welcome Home President Cathy!

Chris shared delightful stories of her childhood aspirations to be a doctor, being part of the first class of Med School students and UC Davis, meeting a handsome young doctor-to-be, moving to Nevada City to raise her family and become our areas first practicing female physician.  She was blazing trails as an internist in her medical practice with Bill and super mom raising three children.  She did take a break from medicine for a few years to give her young toddlers more undivided attention.

Today she and Bill have retired from their medical practices and are involved in our community in many ways beyond Rotary.  Chris is our program co-chair and proud Rotarian!  Thank you Chris!

And we welcomed Cathy back from her miles and miles and miles and miles of hiking!

Girls Who Code is now in session & You can participate!

A new Girls Who Code session has started at our new location in Seven Hills Middle School under the leadership of Seven Hills teacher, Leslie May. There are currently 23 girls enrolled. This is a younger group, with lots of giggles and fidgeting, and with a positive attitude for the opportunities ahead.

A sweet way for you to participate:

Treating the girls to refreshments one or more times throughout the school year is a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program.

Dave Bunje is circulating a signup sheet for our support with refreshments for the girls each week.  The girls certainly appreciate the snacks. Dave suggests that it is good to bring something sweet, something salty, including something filling.  Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. Lynn Ching has set the bar with hard boiled eggs, sliced apples with almond butter, popcorn and red vines.  If you have not signed up for a slot in coming months, please contact Dave.  Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!

Please note: NEW PLACE AND TIME: The club now meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
