Dear Rotarians and Friends,

SYRCL's Yuba River Cleanup & Restoration Day - NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

9:00 AM – 1:00 PM PDT and Party after

The Annual River Cleanup Day, held every year on the third Saturday in September, has mobilized the community to keep the Yuba watershed clean and beautiful for generations. Join the over 800 volunteers who every year dedicate their Saturday for the benefit of the Yuba. Join the crew on our own Miner's Trail or at a favorite spot along the Yuba River or watershed spot.  SYRCL needs many more volunteers. You can register to volunteer NOW!

This Week's Lunch Meeting: Carolyn Feuille ~ Kazakhstan Sister Club

Carolyn Feuille in Kazakhstan

At this week's lunch meeting Carolyn Feuille will share details of her recent trip through Russia and then to Astana, Kazakhstan for six days. She did a Rotary Friendship Exchange and stayed with Lyazzat Alshinova, the Astana Rotary Club president, and her family. They took steps to initiate a Twin Club relationship with Nevada City Rotary.

In Astana, Carolyn also stayed with Open World delegate Aizhan Mukatayeva.  Her numerous activities included seeing Emin Askerov’s furniture workshop, visiting a horse ranch where they make fermented horse-milk as a health drink, meeting George Krol, the U. S. Ambassador at the embassy in Astana, giving a presentation to the Astana Rotary Club and two other organizations, and being the guest of honor at a dinner accompanied by a professional dhombra musician and singer, and so forth.  Her incredible, whirlwind agenda was arranged mostly by Elina Askerova - who works at the embassy and was the delegate she and Bob hosted. All the delegates except Ruslan (who lives in Almaty 500 miles from Astana) were able to join in at least two activities.

Last Week:  RYLA Update

Michael Trujillo and Sophia Pardini shared their very special life-altering experiences at RYLA.  Both talked about gaining confidence and valued insights.  They participated in separate sessions but had similar profound experiences.  As a result they are taking on new leadership roles at school and in their daily lives.

Leaving their cellphones at home was a big ask for RYLA but both were very happy to experience the freedom of disconnecting for a week.  Sophia commented on that "cellphones put a fog on every day life" but now that their RYLA camp is over they are maintaining new friendships by texting in meaningful supportive dialogues with their cabin mates and the full camp (100 member) texting groups.

You may have worked with them at the Fair!  Michael worked Wednesday afternoon and Sophia on Sunday afternoon!

“Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren't any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn't be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life's challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. So be that one person.” ― R. Buckminster Fuller
