Dear Rotarians and Friends,
As I started to flip my "3-month-at-a-glance" calendar over to November, I realized how quickly this year has flown by. There are only 56 shopping days left until Christmas. As a Rotary Club, we've been busy this year. To list a few: we had a successful booth at the fair again (raising about $9,000.00), Girls Who Code is going strong under Dave Bunje's able leadership, we've held clean-up days on the Nevada City Rotary Club-built Miners trail and at Penzance Park, we've walked to increase awareness for Rotary's efforts to eradicate Polio and Walt and Sandy Stickel and Carolyn Feuille ran/walked to help raise money for NEO.
Our Area 4 Clubs are coming together to raise $5,000 to support local residents who lost homes or were heavily impacted by fires this month. Robin Milam has done a fantastic job putting the Support Nevada County Residents Rebuild Giving Trail campaign together. To learn more and/or make a donation of any amount, please visit: https://givingtrail.org/campaigns/200110/support-nevada-county-ca-residents-rebuild-after-fires. We encourage you to use the Support Nevada County Rebuild email Cathy sent last week as a template for inviting friends and loved ones to donate with us. It is also a great way to share with friends some of what we do as Rotary for our community.
As I write this there are only three days left in October and that means the holidays are fast approaching. Thanksgiving is less than one month away and, since I doubt even the most loyal of Rotarians will be eager to hold a meeting that day, we will be moving our regular meeting to November 30th to participate in the Foundation Dinner. I really encourage everyone to try to attend this event. It is a special time when we pause to recognize the work of the Rotary Foundation and the contributions of clubs and individuals that make that work possible. In the coming weeks you will be hearing more about the dinner as Nicole Dillard talks about it and takes sign-ups.
Holiday Party - Tuesday December 12 at the Burke's Home
We have also set the date for our annual Holiday Party. John and Carla Burke have graciously offered to host the party in their home and Judy Soldavini is again showing her party planning skills coordinating the food, drinks and other details. If you would like to help with the party, let either of them know. The date is set for Tuesday, December 12th so get it on your calendar NOW! You all know how busy December gets.
I don't know about you, but I had a fun time with "Last Man or Woman Standing" at the last mixer and I think I'll do it again this week. Here's a clue to help you get ready for it..... FYI, RSVP ASAP and PDQ to the BYOB mixer of the RCONC. Hope to see you all Thursday evening. Oh, did I mention we are busy!
This Week: Social Mixer 5:30pm at The National
Robin will share snippets of what is going on locally and globally for our environment from Bear Yuba Land Trust to Bonn Germany and beyond.
October 24 for World Polio Day Walk with Cathy at the Lead!
Nevada City Rotary had a great turn out for our from Nevada City to Grass Valley and back on our Walk to End Polio. Dennis, Dave B., Walt, Sandy, Cathy, Carla, John and Robin started and were soon joined by Chris and Bill, then Carolyn Feuille and we met PV Barbara Ross along the way.
Cathy's walk to end Polio and the campaign on Giving Trail have ended. Thank you all for helping to make it so successful. Together we have raised over $2,500.00 for Polio Plus and matched with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant it will be over $7,500.00 to help finish the fight against Polio.
InConcert Sierra's Executive and Artistic Directors shared how very special InConcert Sierra is for our community when it comes to great music and community – “Not just concerts, but Musical Experiences!
If you missed or want to see the video they shared one more time, click the InConcert Sierra icon or go to their website at http://www.inconcertsierra.org/about/organization-overview/
Speaking of busy schedules... Coffee, tea or hot chocolate?
Maybe a drink at the National Hotel bar? Whatever you choose - drinks are on me. But the offer has a string attached - feedback! I had a lot of time to think while I walked this summer and I thought about our club and each member in it. Email me with dates/days/times you are available. If I don't hear from you first, I'll be getting in touch with members in the coming weeks to set up a time when we can chat and you can let me know what's on your mind when it comes to our Club and how you would like to Make a Difference.
Area 4 is hosting an all Club Social Event and Concert Friday, Nov 3 at Reiki Kitchen Event Center and Off Broadway. Don't miss Kris Stepanian & Dominic Stepanian In Concert at Off Broad Street. Cost for Concert and Social Hour with Heavy Appetites is $40.00/person. Concert only at $28.00 per person. Drop-dead date for reservations is TODAY October 31. Reservations can be called in to Anita at 530-272-6036. This will be a really fun Rotary social event.
Be a "sweet heart" for Girls Who Code
Treating the girls to refreshments one or more times throughout the school year is a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program. We still have open slots for later in the year!
See Dave Bunje. He is circulating a signup sheet for our support with refreshments for the girls each week. The girls certainly appreciate the snacks. Dave suggests that it is good to bring something sweet, something salty, including something filling. Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. Lynn Ching has set the bar with hard boiled eggs, sliced apples with almond butter, popcorn and red vines. If you have not signed up for a slot in coming months, please contact Dave. Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!
Please note: NEW PLACE AND TIME: The club now meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
