Rotario November 16, 2017
Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Back before the Rotary International President had a theme for the year (that started in 1953-1954 with the theme 'Rotary is Hope in Action'), the Presidents had a Rotary vision. In the Rotary year 1916-1917, a man named Arch Klumph had a vision; An endowment to fund the association's good works into perpetuity. That vision resulted in The Rotary Foundation. In the April 1929 Rotarian, Arch Klump stated "The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary as expressed in our Objects and with the just fear of God and love of our fellowmen, we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity."
Now over a hundred years later, Rotarians around the world have proven those words to be correct. Funded through the generous giving of Rotarians and partnerships with other such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Rotary Foundation has provided funding to brighten lives around the world through a multitude of projects that provide clean water, promote peace, support education and fight disease and so much more.
November is Foundation Month and, with Thanksgiving just a week away, it is a great time to think about all that Rotary has done and is doing and to give thanks. It is also a great time to show that thanks with a contribution to the Rotary Foundation.

Support Nevada County Residents Rebuild after Fires
Why are we asking for your support? This picture shows the before and after effects of local fires on just one family in our community last month.
So far we have raised $900 of our $5,000 GivingTrail.org goal for local families heavily impacted by the fires last month. You can donate via Support Nevada County Residents Rebuild Giving Trail campaign at https://givingtrail.org/campaigns/200110/support-nevada-county-ca-residents-rebuild-after-fires.
We encourage you to use the Support Nevada County Rebuild email Cathy sent as a template for inviting friends and loved ones to donate with us. It is also a great way to share with friends some of what we do as Rotary for our community.
Last Week Lunch: Kat Kress Miners Foundry Cultural Center
Kat Kress, Event Coordinator for The Miners Foundry Cultural Center shared the living history and impact of Nevada County's most historic cultural arts and community events center.
Kat says “For me, the Foundry is the perfect blend of history, the arts, and community. It’s truly a joy to share in something bigger than myself and to use my skills to contribute to our community.” It is a symbol of California’s rich historical heritage, providing an educational and social bridge from our past to the present and future.
ACME Robotics - Special Guests
Dave Bunje introduced Stephanie Lewis and her husband, Michael, who are mentors for the ACME Robotics Team. Stephanie, an engineer at Telestream, was also last year’s Girls Who Code instructor. They came to thank the club for sponsorship last year, which enabled ACME Robotics to travel to Western Regional competition, where they put in a very good showing. Note the NC Rotary banner on their robot!
The club was also presented a $500 sponsorship donation to the team for this school year. Our sponsorship supports the team in preparing for a new round of competition and a new robot to replace last year's Roadrunner according to a new set of specifications. Our Nevada City Rotary logo will again appear on their robot as well as on the ACME team banner at tournaments, T-shirts and their website.
This year ACME's robotics team includes 11 brilliant, creative students - almost double the size of last year's team. They operate with three sub-teams which focus on Hardware, Software and Business aspects.
Stephanie, Michael and Mike continue as mentors along with two new mentors Josh and Ron.
Learn more about the team at http://goacmerobotics.com/.

If you would like to help with the party, let either of Judy or Carla know. The date is set for Tuesday, December 12th so get it on your calendar NOW!
Note our Club meeting moves to TUESDAY that week!
Wreath Across America to Honor Veterans in our local cemeteries
Honor our veterans with the purchase of a wreath to be placed in local cemeteries for the holidays. Each wreath is $15 and must be ordered this week. Wreaths will be distributed on Saturday December 16 at the two cemeteries on West Main.
Speaking of busy schedules... Coffee, tea or hot chocolate?
Maybe a drink at the National Hotel bar? Whatever you choose - drinks are on me. But the offer has a string attached - feedback! I had a lot of time to think while I walked this summer and I thought about our club and each member in it. Email me with dates/days/times you are available. If I don't hear from you first, I'll be getting in touch with members in the coming weeks to set up a time when we can chat and you can let me know what's on your mind when it comes to our Club and how you would like to Make a Difference.
Treats for Girls Who Code
Treat yourself by treating the girls to refreshments one or more times throughout the school year ~ a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program.
Dave Bunje has a signup sheet with open refreshment slots for the girls each week. The girls certainly appreciate the snacks ~ it is good to offer something sweet, something salty, including something filling. Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. If you have not signed up for a slot, please contact Dave. Let's get the commitments in place before Dave leaves us! Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!
Please note: NEW PLACE AND TIME: The club now meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
