Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.
This Week - Bubbles, Fishes and Wonder at Lions Lake
What a delight to experience the Seven Hills and Union Hill Leadership and Adaptive Education students buddying together around Lions Lake to fish, play field games and make HUGE bubbles. John Hensley reported that our Tuesday, May 16 event was our 19th year to partner with Seven Hills and Union Hills education staff for which we organize the picnic lunch for students, staff and chaperones. It was a bit nippy but fun. Adaptive Physical Ed specialist John Bryan (and event coordinator) custom made fishing poles and special tools for making BIG beautiful bubbles in the wind. The wonder and delight of seeing fish on a line after a nibble drew a lot of the students back to the lake. Grass Valley Fire Department came for a demostration but got called away as soon as they were parked.
Thank you Nevada City Rotary for a full team effort and a fabulous day!
Note: Because of this Club event, our Thursday meeting has MOVED to Tuesday..
Last Week - John Woodford Presented Status of the Club Foundation
As our resident CPA, John came to our lunch meeting to provide annual details of the status of our club foundation. He started by reviewing how our club foundation came into existence as an alternative for some of our key donors to have a tax exempt method of applying their donations to local initiatives and scholarships. Unfortunately, as John reported, some of these large dollar contributors are no longer with the club. The good news is that a one time donation of $10,000 has allowed the foundation funds to stand and a value of about $25,000. In the coming years, John anticipates planned expenditures for various scholarships to be in the $12-$15,000 range. With this in mind John reminded the club this foundation is entirely dependent on voluntary donations by club members. And he reiterated that this Foundation is not in competition with donations requested by Rotary International for the Rotary International Foundation.

The last two steps are to reinstall the swamp cooler, and complete the drywall repairs inside the booth. AND we've identified a contractor who complete the interior drywall repairs in the next few days. The final interior painting will be another opportunity for our ambitious club members.
In Other News
Dave Bunje's Trip Report from the GV Men's Choir
Former Pres. Dave gave the club a detailed trip report of the men's choir expedition across England and especially the Cornwall region. They stopped in over 30 venues over a period of five days and were welcomed by local Rotary clubs as well. Dave specifically noted some of the differences in club protocols in that they do not do flag salutes, sing the national anthem, nor recite the four-way test at the meetings he attended. Dave had nothing but positive reports on the warm greetings he and the rest of the choir received from the locals.
Miners Trail Task Force - Meeting at City Hall May 10
A second meeting was held at Nevada City hall to discuss what can be done to keep the Rotary Miners Trail and its newly placed sign clear of vandalism and transients sleeping and partying under the highway 20/49 overpass. The task force was organized by local advocate Jim Morris, and participation included a member of the Nevada City Police Department, City Manager Mark Prestwich, several residents adjacent to the trail, as well as Pres. Walt and President-elect Cathy Wilcox Barnes. Several alternatives were proposed, including reinforced fencing, adding lights under the overpass, and organizing more groups of people to frequent the trail, hopefully discouraging transients from parking there. The next meeting is planned to occur at City Hall on May 31 at 11 AM.
