Rotario - March 1, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

* * * THIS WEEK - MOVED TO  NEVADA CITY WINERY

321 Spring St, Nevada City, CA 95959
Social Mixer - 5:30pm   Directions

"Have Rotary Will Travel" is still playing on the Nevada City Rotary Club channel. Your Relocation Committee is hard at work trying to check out all the potential sites that have been recommended to us by members and interested citizens. (Thank you Robin for the great coverage in The Union - I've had several calls from readers with suggestions.) We've had two delightful meetings at the Trolley Junction where the staff went out of their way to accommodate us. This week we will be gathering at the Nevada City Winery for our March 1st Mixer (Thank you Michael Young for the suggestion and Carla Burke for making the arrangements). Word has it that Carla and Judy Soldavini are planning the refreshments so I'm sure we'll be in for a treat.

As Cathy announced last week, Amelia Barrett has been proposed as a new member for Nevada City Rotary. Carla Burke is her Sponsor.  Her Rotary Classification is Property Manager/Broker.

At this week's mixer, Robin Milam will share highlights from her wonderful weekend at Rotary's first ever Presidential Peacebuilding Conference on Environmental Sustainability and Peace hosted by RIP Ian Riseley.  Robin joined 800 Rotarians and guests from over 30 countries who converged on Vancouver, BC Canada for a thought provoking, fun filled, engaging weekend.

Last Week - Lynn Woerner KARE Crisis Nursery

What a very special service KARE Crisis Nursery of Nevada County provides for families with small children who are experiencing a stressful situation. Lynn Woerner, Executive Director of the KARE Crisis Nursery in Grass Valley shared personal, heart touching stories of the many families who have benefited from KARE Crisis Nursery. Children from birth through age 6 can be placed in the KARE Crisis Nursery as needs define to help families navigate their way through challenging times.  Lynn's compassion and dedication inspired us all.

Camp RYLA Opportunity

If you enjoy interacting with teens and the beauty of the Sierras, then serving as a counselor at Camp RYLA this summer may be just the right volunteer experience for you.

WHAT:  The Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening Camp is for high school seniors who engage in challenging personal leadership activities, such as discussions, outdoor ropes course, learning games, and dancing.  It is a first-class character-building program.

WHERE: Grizzly Creek Ranch, near Portola in the high Sierras.

WHEN:  June 17-22, June 24-29, July 8-13

COST:  No cost for room and board; counselors provide snacks to their cabin girls or boys, about $30.

Ask Carolyn Feuille, who served as a counselor in 2016-2017, how she found it to be “exhilarating and inspiring.”  For more info. go to:  http://www.camp-ryla.org/Counselor

You can also sign up for a Breakout Session on RYLA and REGLE at Club Leadership Assembly.  A key focus of that session will be on the counseler opprotunity.

Los Barriles April 19-24

It looks like we have a good sized, fun-loving group heading down to Los Barriles to help on our International Service project in April. There is still time for people to make reservations and join us for this worth-while time of work and bonding with our partner club in Mexico. It is always so rewarding to see how appreciated our efforts are and how our contributions can help in so many ways to Make a Difference.

We always have fun while participating in life-changing projects Chris Geyer and John Hensley spearhead.  Current plans are for the group to volunteer at the East Cape Health Center in Los Barriles. We will plan to depart on April 19, work on April 20-22 and play on April 23, return home on the 23rd or 24th.

This is a low-cost, fun and very rewarding service project that is well organized and just needs you.  Yes, YOU!
Ask Carolyn Feuille for details if you are interested in joining us.

Treats and Hosts for Girls Who Code

The program will wind down later this Spring. Openings pop up so you if you are looking to treat yourself by treating the girls to refreshments one or more times this spring let us know.  It is a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program. The girls certainly appreciate the snacks ~ it is good to offer something sweet, something salty, including something filling.  Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. If you have not signed up for a slot, please contact Nancy.  Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!

GWC club meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
