Rotario July 5, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

A new Rotary year begins!

Social Mixer 5:30pm - this Thursday July 5th
with Lyazzat Alshinova, President of Rotary Club of Astana Kazakhstan
Trolley Junction at the Northern Queen
$5 & BYOB

The big wheel of our Rotary lives continues to turn as we close the door on an incredible year and step across the threshold of a new one.  We will always remember the laughing, the smiling and the good times working shoulder-to-shoulder, raking, pruning and planting.  Encouraging students to build robotics, code, deliver speeches and play music.  Changing lives by sending young people to RYLA and REGL and making improvements to a clinic in Mexico and supporting a Rotary Club in Kazakhstan.  Just as important as what we do together for others, we continue to change our own lives by living Service Above Self.  By living our motto we do make the world a better place.  Along with the happy there was some sad.  We had to say goodbye to two long time Rotarians and incredible human beings, Larry Undercoffer and Tom Coleman. More memories to be carried in our hearts and the reminder that the time to get things done is when we can.

And so we begin our new year on day one with a Friendship Exchange welcoming Lyazzat Alshinova, President of the Rotary Club of Astana in Kazakhstan, for a fun filled, action packed week of sharing our Club and community.  More information on the week’s line up below.

I hope to see a lot of you at the Nevada City 4th of July Parade.  I’ve heard that it is legendary and this will be my first experience so come on out and show me how it’s done.

The stars have aligned for our first meeting at this Thursday’s mixer when we will induct long time friend to the Club and friend to all one Thomas Talbot Milam as the newest member of our Club and before he can sit down we will induct a very enthusiastic Nathan Thomas Leishman as our newest member.  I’m starting to see a Thomas theme here and I like it.  If for some unexplainable reason that’s not enough incentive to come to our first mixer of the year our speaker will be Lyazzat from Kazakhstan.

I encourage everyone to come early and get a good seat.

Our theme for the year is Be The Inspiration and I just can’t think of anything more inspiring than the first week of our new Rotary year.

I am so looking forward to spending the year with my friends with a similar heart and desire to stand together and make the world a better place.

Friendship Exchange with Lyazzat Alshinova, President Astana Rotary July 1- 8

What a way to Celebrate - Cathy's Demotion

Congratulations and thank you Cathy and Club for Making a Difference as Nevada City Rotary this past year. The tables were turned and Cathy was the last person standing.  Flossie May - Aunt Ida's long lost sister came off the trail to greet Cathy and all. Cathy generously recognized her Board and our members. As we demoted Cathy, PE Tom got his bell and pin to start the new year.  We acknowledged AG Dennis for his leadership of Area 4 for the last 3 years. Between the laughter and the remembrances, we had a delightful evening with a wonderful turnout!

July 1 - New Rotary Year Dues for 2018-2019

Dues invoices were distributed at our meeting and then mailed to everyone else. You will notice something new on your Dues statement this year. You have the opportunity to donate money toward your Paul Harris Fellow, club expenses or the Nevada City Rotary Foundation at the time you pay your dues. Sort of a one-stop shopping approach to simplify your busy lives. Now, with one check you can fulfill your Rotary obligations. Of course, there will be plenty of other opportunities for you to give as you wish throughout the year. By collecting things such as E.R.E.Y. (Every Rotarian Every Year achieved when all members give $25.00) or your contribution towards being a Paul Harris Sustaining member ($100.00 per year), or generous donations towards our own club expenses or to our Club Foundation, we will have a better idea of where our club stands financially and where to direct our fundraising efforts. If you would prefer to just pay your dues as usual, that's perfectly OK also. Your Board is here to help make this coming Rotary year fun, rewarding and hassle-free  Let us know what you think!

The following is a breakdown of where you dues are allocated:

Goes to Amount
  Rotary International   $    60.00
  The Rotarian   $    10.00
  District 5190   $    38.00
  Club operations   $    67.00  (*$57.00)
  Total Dues 2018-2019         $ 180.00 (*$170 by July 15)

The Children's Festival - Friday July 27

Children's Festival

A big thank you to Nancy Kemp for her year round planning efforts and leadership for this very special Nevada City Renaissance Festival for so many years!  And to Sandy Stickel and Gayle Denney who are again hosting craft tables for the children.  Volunteering at the Children's Festival is always lots of fun because the children with their parents and grandparents have such a fabulous time.  Check with Sandy and Gayle to volunteer in supporting with nature sun prints or renaissance block prints.

2018 Nevada County Fair

Bushels of Fun are what we are planning for this year's Nevada County Fair!

As always, Walt Stickel has the signup sheet in great shape already. There are some openings, especially for the 7-close shifts left so make sure you've got your name on the shifts you want before they are gone and ask family members or friends to join you for a shift.

A great selling point is that fact that it is always a blast, they get to see people they haven't seen in ages because EVERYONE stops by our booth for the great pulled-pork sandwiches and, as if that isn't enough, they get a free ticket into the fair.

Watch for a work party to clean up and prep our booth in late July!!!

Click for a printable 2018 Bushels of Fun Fair Poster!

Join us August 8 – 12, 2018

We need your support and partnership serving at the Fair!

Join us at our Nevada City Rotary booth on Treat Street as we dish up Pulled Pork and Shredded Chicken sandwiches for our annual community service fundraiser.  We need to fill 100 openings to cover the 5 days of the Fair.  We are asking Nevada City Rotarians be responsible for filling at least 3 shifts during Fair Week -- in the spirit of sharing the load we encourage you to engage friends and colleagues to work with us.  Working with friends and family is fun and a great way to serve not just Rotary but our Community!  Click to the Latest Schedule icon to check for open shifts.

To schedule to work one or more shifts, send an email to news@ncrotary.org stating which shift you are available and willing to cover.  We ask you to be reponsible for finding a replacement in the event you can not make your shift.  THANK YOU for all you do in service for Rotary, our Club and our Community!
