Last Week: Lunch with Gavin Healy Balance Point Home Performance

Cathy and Gavin Healy Balance PointGavin Healy of Balance Point Home Performance presented an excellent overview of how professionals such as Gavin assess the energy efficiency of a home or building. Over the last few years, Gavin and his partner have competed in a national effort to achieve a 75% or > improvement in energy efficiency with their subject being Gavin's 1890s Victorian home on Spring St in Nevada City. They have exceed that goal to achieve 85% improvement. Only 28 or so buildings have been successful achieving the 75% goal! A great presentation! earn more about Balance Point at http://www.balancepointhp.com/

Cathy has left for the Camino Santiago in Spain!!!

Cathy with End Polio pins on her hatCathy is walking 582 miles across northern Spain and raising money for Rotary's End Polio Now! campaign! We are already at 50% of our initial goal ... let's blow the lid off this goal and make the SKY THE LIMIT!

Join Cathy by making a donation to EndPolio as she walks the Camino Santiago del Norte.  Cathy has been preparing for over a year and now her trek is almost upon us. We have set up an online Giving Trail Campaign where you can follow Cathy's progress and encourage her by making a tax-deductible donation to Rotary's EndPolio Now Campaign.  Cathy plans to distribute End Polio Now pins along the way.  She left with 2 lbs of pins on her hat thanks to pinning by Club members.

Visit the Make History Today ~ End Polio Once and For All! campaign often to track Cathy's progress along the trail.  We will be posting photos and updates of her progress as well as watching the contributions grow.  You will be getting a personal email with more details in the coming days. Cathy is dedicating her walk in honor of Sam Dardick.

Watch for more details!

Children's Festival

On Friday, July 21st, 2017, The Children's Festival will return to Pioneer Park in Nevada City. For one special day each year, Pioneer Park in Nevada City park is transformed into a magical wonderland with over twenty arts and crafts tables, strolling minstrels, jugglers, face-painters, a bridge-guarding troll, a bevy of faeries, Pepper the Witch, medieval fencing, spinning demonstrations, Queen Elizabeth and her court, Pyrate Skool, and Claude, the life-sized mechanical dragon.

There will be two sessions: from 9am - noon and from 5pm - 8pm. Admission to each session is $3. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. And we are still looking for two additional volunteers to staff the "Solar Art" station from 9 to 12. Contact Nancy Kemp for details.

A big Thank You to Nancy Kemp, Gayle Denney and Sandy Stickel for your year round preparation.  Volunteers are needed to support the Solar Art for the morning session and possibly other activities.  It is lots of fun!  Please contact Nancy, Gayle or Sandy if you are available. County Fair Update & Save the Dates:

Saturday July 29     Booth Clean up
Thursday August 3  Pre-Fair Picnic   5:30pm on Treat Street.  Bring a dessert or salad.  And you will get your Fair tickets!
Wed Aug 9 - Sun Aug 13  Sea You at the Fair!!!

This year's Nevada County Fair which will be held August 9 through August 13. So naturally we continue to circulate the sign-up sheet for staffing all of the work shifts. We're hoping that each active member will help "Share the Load" and not only be able to staff at least two shifts per member, but also recruit friends and relatives for additional shifts. We now have 76 of the 100 slots filled, AND still need evening shift captains for most days. And we still have a HUGE HOLE ON FRIDAY -- HELP!!! See the last schedule at 2017 Fair Schedule. You can access, but not update the shift schedule at the Club web site. Please Email updates to Pres. Walt or Sect. Robin.

Nevada City Rotary Bench in front of The National

Stained bench slatsMany of you may have noticed that the wooden bench in front of The National needs some tender loving care.  Rather than refinish the original slats that are now many decades old, Tom Ryan offered to cut new slats.  He selected beautiful oak from which he cut and trimmed 12 new slats AND hand chizzled Rotary Club of Nevada City.  Robin has just refinished them using a natural penofin oil finish.

Tom Ryan and Robin will be installing the new slats on Saturday morning July 22. A big, big thank you to SAR Tom! These slats are BEAUTIFUL!!!

Rotary at The River Cats

Friday, September 1st. About $40.00 per person which includes bus trip to Raley Field with food and drinks on bus and ticket to game. We usually sit above 1st base (great seats located out of the sun!).

Leave K-Mart shopping center in GV at 5:00pm and return home at about 11:30pm. Great fun with other Rotarians. 115 of us went last year. Robin needs to know names and numbers by August 10. Each club to gather $$ and cut one check per club to Mark Fleming.

Club Leadership Travels July - September

As a reminder, some of our key Board members will be traveling during the summer and various Club members are filling leadership gaps over the next few months.

Cathy preparing to leave for CaminoCathy is leaving the bell in the care of Sergeant at Arms Tom Ryan along with protection tools.

After participating in 8 Rotary meetings in the last week along with AG Dennis Geare, Cathy also felt that Dennis could use some more time (aka Thyme) in his life.
