Rotario - January 9, 2020

 Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday January 9, 2020 - Lunch Meeting 12:15pm

Trolley Junction at Northern Queen Hotel
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City Directions

Welcome to 2020!

I hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating entering a new decade. Some of us, like me, celebrated on New York time and in a quiet way. I’m sure others enjoyed some of the wonderful music and frivolity offered in our community. Whatever way you celebrated, I hope you paused to reflect on the year just passing (2019) and to look forward to the upcoming year (2020). If you did, maybe some of that reflection and anticipation of things to come was about the Nevada City Rotary Club and your valuable participation in it. What a great end to 2019 with our Polio Walk and Foundation Dinner, followed by a relaxing, fun-filled evening at our holiday party. We have a great, albeit busy, year ahead. Just a look at our Upcoming Events will exhaust you. We have a fantastic President Elect in Tom Milam and an exciting couple of months as he gears up for his term. We have multiple projects/events between now and the end of this Rotary year including our Los Barriles clinic, Hungry Games, bulb planting and hopefully a garage sale.

Here’s to 2020 and a great team to make it a bang-up year in this new decade!

Rotary - Ethics with Dennis Geare

Ethics. What are ethics? Am I ethical? Is it ever appropriate to tell a little white lie while conducting business? What does it mean to be ethical? Is being ethical out-of-style and no longer necessary???  The topic of ethics is as complex as it is simple. It’s as simple as “Do the right thing!” and as complex as “What is the right thing in this situation.” As Rotarians we have the Four-Way Test to help guide us but even that is confusing sometimes when we must decide just what will be beneficial to all concerned? What is ethical behavior when dealing with difficult people and why should I care anyway?

Our own Dennis Geare, the Ethics Chair for District 5190, will help answer all these difficult questions and more at our Thursday luncheon meeting. Dennis travels all over the District giving talks on ethics and he has graciously accepted our invitation to talk to our own club about this important subject. In this day and age, with the constant pressure to “take care of #1 first” and “whatever it takes to get it done” being pounded into us daily in print, airwaves and person-to-person a gentle reminder of what it takes to be ethical and how important it is in our daily lives, this is a meeting you won’t want to miss.

In case you missed it, The Four-Way Test in a post-truth era by Joseph Epstein Illustrations by Davide Bonazzi from the Rotarian Magazine

Night at the Museum - Nevada City Firehouse #1

We had about 25 Rotarians and guests who braved the cold Firehouse No. 1 building to join us last Thursday for our “Night at the Museum.” I’m not sure about anyone else, but I enjoyed it. Of course, I got to pick the topics and talk about what I wanted for the tour. If you missed out, I’d love to have you come visit the museum when we open again for our regular season (May 1 to Oct. 31, 2020).  I’m still getting used to typing 2020 so if you see 2019, make sure I’m talking about past, not future events.

A BIG THANK YOU CATHY for a wonderfully fun and informative visit to one of our local treasures!

Los Barriles Project 2020 - January 30 - February 3

The Los Barriles team is making final travel plans.  They will be participating in wellness checks and eye examinations for the children of the greater East Cape area around Los Barriles. The vision clinic is an expansion of the East Cape Medical Clinic and is becoming a reality through our partnership. We will be participating in a Rotary grant with Los Barriles and Reno Rotary Clubs in the coming year.

If you’ve never gone on this project, I encourage you to try to join us this year. It is a very rewarding experience (and we also find time to relax and have fun with our twin club members). The team is firming up plans quickly, so if you want to go, contact Carolyn Feuille now!

Again, big thanks  to Carolyn Feuille for putting this together again this year.
