Rotario - January 2 Happy New Year 2020!

 Dear Rotarians and Friends,

NOTE TIME:  4:30pm Thursday January 2, 2020
SPECIAL GUIDED TOUR of
NEVADA CITY FIREHOUSE MUSEUM #1
WITH PRESIDENT CATHY

 214 Main St., Nevada City

From the Rear-View Mirror

It’s the end of December already. 2019 is almost in the rear-view mirror and a new decade is fast approaching as we ring in 2020. As I reflect on the last half of 2019 (my six months as President of the Rotary Club of Nevada City) I am struck by the highs and lows we’ve experienced; individually and as a Club. We’ve shared the pain of loss that Michael Young and Carla Burke have experienced. We’ve shared the joys of new “grandparenthood” with Tom Ryan as well as Gayle and Dave Denney and the anticipation of an upcoming wedding with Chris and Bill Newsom. We’ve worried together about a President-Elect. We’ve shared laughter and tears and the gamut of emotions between them. I see the way we care about each other and our community and the willingness of members to step up and help whenever/wherever needed.

Our Rotary theme this year, as I remind you each meeting, is “Rotary Connects the World.” The thread I see running through everything we have experienced the past six months is the “connection” we all share. I’m proud of our club, I’m proud of each one of you and I know as we head into 2020 it is going to be an active, wonderful, productive next six months. Thank you all and Happy New Year!

As you know, we lost one of our long-time active members on Christmas Eve as John Burke - known affectionately to many as "Red" - danced his way out of this world and on to his next adventure. We’ll all miss his wonderful smile and wicked sense of humor. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to Carla and their family. Information will be forthcoming on his service and Celebration of Life.

Looking to 2020:  President-Elect Tom Milam

I’m not too good at doing New Year Resolutions. I’m more into setting goals that may (or may not) be doable. Why make a resolution to stop eating sweets when I know I’ll fail miserably? So instead I’ll set a goal to only eat one (or maybe two) sweets a day. Sounds reasonable, right?

So, my “goal” that I was going to set for our Rotary Club was to find a President-Elect before February. No need to now – we already reached that goal! Tom Milam stepped up and before he could change his mind, the Board approved and recommended him to the entire club.  And our club unanimously voted “aye.” Talk about a wonderful Christmas present and a great start to the New Year! How are we going to top that? Thank you, Tom, for offering your time and talents to our club in this special way – we couldn’t be in better hands for 2020-2021.

RLI II is scheduled for Saturday January 25.  PE Tom is signed up and looking for others to join him. It will be facilitated by Dennis Geare, Stacy Graham, PDG John Sullivan and Robin Milam. See registration and details below.

Nevada City Firehouse #1Night at the Museum -
Nevada City Firehouse #1

To start the new year off, we’re going to spend a “Night at the Museum.” Well, maybe just a late afternoon, early evening at the museum. We will be meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Firehouse No. 1 museum. For those who may not be familiar with it, the museum is located at 214 Main St., Nevada City, in the old Firehouse (two doors up from Treats – NOT on Broad St). As of this writing the heater is still not working so make sure you bundle up. We’ll tour the museum and learn a little about Nevada County history (I promise there won’t be a test). Hopefully, I’ll have hot coffee and cider with some treats to share. Unfortunately, the fire bell is inoperable so we can’t “ring in the New Year” but hopefully you’ll enjoy the informal meeting.

Editor's note: If you have never been on a tour with Cathy, this will be a NOT-TO-BE-MISSED special treat!  Cathy has an AMAZING command of Nevada County history and is the BEST TOUR GUIDE you could ever want!

Los Barriles Project 2020 - January 30 - February 3

We can’t rest on our laurels (or poinsettias) yet. We still have lots of things coming up – like our Los Barilles project which is only 1 month away. The vision clinic is an expansion of the East Cape Medical Clinic and is becoming a reality as we continue to be an active partner. We will be participating in a Rotary grant with Los Barriles and Reno Rotary Clubs in the coming year.

Speaking of New Years Resolutions, participating in wellness checks and eye examinations for the children of the greater East Cape area around Los Barriles would be a perfect way to start the new decade in 2020!

If you’ve never gone on this project, I encourage you to try to join us this year. It is a very rewarding experience (and we also find time to relax and have fun with our twin club members). The team is firming up plans quickly, so if you want to go, contact Carolyn Feuille now!

Thanks goes to Carolyn Feuille for putting this together again this year.
