As the world turns...
It has taken a week, but things are beginning to settle down again after my return from Los Barriles. You know that feeling – take a couple of days off from your normal routine and it takes twice that to get caught up! The problem is that we took time away in Los Barriles, but the Rotary clock didn’t stop. It just kept on ticking off the hours and days to such things as the Community Awards Program, Hungry Games, the music and speech contests, RALLYE and more. I’m sure PE Tom feels the same way since he got back from Pre-Pets and is preparing for PETS. When he returns, we’ll make time to hear about his experiences. If you have never served as President and never been to PETS, you are missing something special. Just the opportunity to attend PETS should get some of you thinking about talking to PE Tom about being our President-Elect Nominee (next in line to the PE). Think about it and talk to Tom M. He has some great ideas for the coming year and being the PE will give you a great opportunity to help him.
Jeannie Wood, CATS - “The Chinese and the Gold Rush”
Hope some of you caught the Chinese New Year parade and events on Sunday (Feb. 9th). Jeannie Woods works hard to bring this event to our community each year. Thankfully the weather cooperated more than last year when it had to be cancelled due to rain. Except for the wind which made it difficult, it was a nice, clear afternoon. Firehouse No. 1 Museum was open so that parade goers could learn about life and the contributions of our Chinese community during the Gold Rush. The reason I am bringing this up is that the contributions didn’t stop when the gold mining did. If you have ever been to one of CATS mesmerizing performances, you’ll realize the contributions that are still being made today. Jeannie Woods is the dynamo and force behind CATS. Jeannie will be our Program speaker this week talking about the Chinese and the Gold Rush. You definitely won’t want to miss her presentation.
Jeannie Wood is grateful for the opportunity to serve Nevada County for the past twenty-six years as Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra’s (CATS) Executive Director, Producer, Marketing Director, Box Office Manager, and Cultural Enrichment Director. Born to immigrant parents in San Francisco’s Chinatown, participating in CATS has given her the opportunity to come full circle with her Chinese-American heritage, which has allowed her to appreciate the best of both worlds. Jeannie is also Nevada County’s Law Librarian, a Mobile Notary, and drums with Grass Valley Taiko. Jeannie is contributing on so many levels!

Next Week: Wednesday, February 19
Area 4 Rotary Community Awards Celebration
The Community Awards Program is next week. Our regular meeting that would normally be held the following day is moved to Wednesday night. We will have a signup sheet at Thursday’s meeting so that I can let them know how many from our club will be attending. For those of you who don’t know, this event was the brainchild of our own Dennis Geare. In addition to being a fun evening, it is inspirational to meet and hear about people in our community who are shining examples of “Service Above Self” and it is a wonderful way to get our Rotary name out in front of the community.
You can 1) purchase tickets in advance through Brown Paper Tickets or
2) signup with Cathy this week or 3) reply to this email.
No-host bar social begins at 5:30pm. Dinner by Antonio's is at 6:15pm.
Program begins at 7:00p.m.
