Penzance Park - Holes Dig for blooming Daffodils
Thursday at our regular NOON Lunch Time

Are any of you familiar with the 1998 National Book Award for Young Peoples Literature and the 1998 Newbury award winning book "Holes?"; written by Louis Sachar it was turned into a movie in 2003. It's the story of wrongfully convicted boy sent to a brutal detention camp in the desert where they dig holes every day. Well, now you get to recreate our Rotary version of "Holes."  Our version has a group of rightfully dedicated Rotarians sent to a potentially beautiful park in Nevada City.  We began by raking and clearing the hillside ...

And now, on December 14, 2017 at 12:15 p.m., instead of sitting at a regular meeting of the club in the National Hotel, we will meet in the open air of Penzance Park and dig HOLES which we will quickly fill with daffodils to bloom in Spring. Plan to bring, as Arlo Guthrie said, an implement of destruction (shovel or other digging tool) and join us for an hour of fun and service. Be sure to wear the shirts you were issued (Walt, that means blue Rotarians at Work, not your standard orange issue). There might even be cookies and soft drinks involved. That little forgotten park is going to be beautiful when the Nevada City Rotary Club gets done with it!

$7,838 Thank You for Support Nevada County Residents Rebuild after Fires

One last update and thank you to Area 4 Rotary in partnership with Nevada City Rotary.  Last week Soroptomist International of the Sierra Foothills came in with a $2,000 check in partnership with our local Rotary Clubs.  So we closed our campaign with $7.839 donated to donated Support Nevada County Residents Rebuild.  Robin delivered a check for the $2,805 donated through GivingTrail. Thanks to you, Rotarians from around the District, community members and like minded organizations who pitched in to make a difference!

SAVE THE DATES: April 19 - 24 Los Barriles Clean Water Project

Los Barilles, Mexico Project 2018:  Our work in the Los Barilles area of Baja Sur, Mexico for school dormitories is complete.  Next we’ll be helping with the clean water project and maybe cleaning a community park in Los Barilles.  Details coming in January.

We will plan to depart on April 19, work on April 20-22 and play on April 23, return home on the 23rd or 24th.

This is a low-cost, fun and very rewarding service project that is well organized and just needs you.  Yes, YOU!

Treats and Hosts for Girls Who Code

Nancy Kemp is taking over coordination of hosts and refreshments and now has the signup form.  This year's program continues through the Spring and we have openings for you if you are looking to treat yourself by treating the girls to refreshments one or more times this winter and spring.  It is a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program.   The girls certainly appreciate the snacks ~ it is good to offer something sweet, something salty, including something filling.  Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. If you have not signed up for a slot, please contact Nancy.  Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!

GWC club meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
