Rotario - August 24, 2017

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

A special message from Cathy!!!

Dear Nevada City Rotarians, I want to thank you all for supporting me in fulfilling my dream of walking the Camino. I arrived in Santiago today (Nevada City Rotary Club banner still proudly flying on my backpack) and after a two hour wait in line I received my Compostelo (verification) for walking the Camino Norte from Irun to Santiago. I'm tired, sore and dirty but also elated. I could never have done this without your encouragement and support and your willingness to pitch in and cover for me.

I feel like each of you were with me today as I walked into the Plaza Del Obradoiro at the Cathedral de Santiago. It was a "Buen Camino" but I'm eager to get back and see what you've been up to in my absence. Since we finished faster than planned we are going to take the opportunity to go to Finistere, Madrid, Toledo and Salamanca before our return to Barcelona and flight home. See you in a couple of weeks. Pres. Cathy

This Week Lunch: Sudoku as a Teaching Tool with Jerry Martin

Sudoku as a Teaching Tool, an innovative new program, is special because: It is the product of three different sources: education, psychology and a common puzzle (Sudoku). Understanding how these three specialties conjoin into a useful tool for the benefit of many humans is creative.

A former Peace Corps teacher in Somalia, textbook author, and college instructor, Jerry Martin moved to Grass Valley in 1996 and began doing his motivational program, Saluting New Readers (SNR), as a volunteer. This program has won two national awards and is now on its 21st year, having motivated over 2200 local children to value reading. For the past four years he has taught Sudoku, as an after-school program, mostly as a volunteer. Last April he produced the FIRST ANNUAL CHILDREN'S TEAM SUDOKU TOURNAMENT, which was attended by 71 elementary students on 20 teams from 10 local schools. Jerry hopes to replicate that tournament next spring, probably enlarging it to include middle schoolers in a separate tournament.

Next Week: August 31 is 5th Thursday so Nevada City Rotary is DARK!

Last Week: Faith Agar and Brand Dellis of Community Legal

Faith AgarFaith Agar, Office Manager and Pro-Bono Attorney Coordinator and summer intern Brandon Dellis provided inspiring insights into the broader mission and everyday work of Community Legal. Faith judiciously coordinates a small but highly resourceful collective of legal professionals and volunteers who generously provide legal advice and counsel that would otherwise be ouside their reach to members of our community.

Trisha and Jeff Dellis were surprised and proud that son Brandon was presenting with Faith. In addition to his valued contributions, for Brandon the internship affords him the opportunity to be mentored and coached by some of Nevada County's most dedicated and competent legal professionals.  Faith also has a family connection to our Club - she is Mom to Thea Pelayo, Girls Who Code student and last summer's Coding for Kids co-ordinator, instructor.
