Rotario - April 5, 2018
Dear Rotarians and Friends,
* * * THIS WEEK MOVED TO * * *
Area Speech Contest
Tuesday April 3rd 12 Noon
at Grass Valley Methodist Church
This Week - Area Speech Contest
This week Rotary comes early! Our regular Thursday meeting is moved to Tuesday, April 3rd at the Grass Valley Methodist Church for the Area Speech Contest. Michael Young has been busy at work giving public speaking tips to our winner to make sure he is prepped and ready to win. Michael is also in charge of signups for the pasty lunch on Tuesday. Even if you haven't signed up, if you have time come by and listen to the speech contest to help give support to these awesome young people. Maybe there will be enough extra pasties for you to eat. If not, I'll sell mine to the highest bidder!
Wednesday March 28: Area Wide Special Community Awards Ceremony
And the winners are:
David Jones - Citizen of the Year;
Marty Lombardi - Volunteer of the Year and
SPD Markets - Lowell Robinson Business of the Year
AG Dennis presided with President Cathy and Presidents of the other 4 Clubs in our Area.
For those of you who couldn't attend, you missed a great event Wednesday evening. The main exhibit hall of the Nevada County Fairgrounds was packed with Rotarians and citizens who had come together to celebrate members of our Community who Make a Difference all year with all they give and do in our area.
The exhibit hall was transformed into a beautiful event center thanks in no small part to the decorating skills of our own Judy Soldavini. Judy stepped forward when our club was asked for a volunteer to help coordinate this huge undertaking. With Anita Daniels (Area Governor Elect) chairing the committee it was no wonder it was so successful. Judy and others who were on the committee worked for hours on Tuesday setting up tables and chairs, a stage, covering tables with black table cloths, gold runner and candles and flower arrangements. It was absolutely beautiful. In addition to all that the shrub arrangements on the stage, complete with burlap coverings and bows, were artfully arranged by Judy and Kris Stepanian (PE Grass Valley).
Thank you to Walt Stickel and Tom Ryan for helping to set up our banner (the plaques on it looked great) and our Club Display; a successful trial run for Conference! Nicole Dillard represented our club in handling the nominations and choosing the winners: Volunteer of the Year (Marty Lombardi); Citizen of the Year (David Jones) and Lowell Robinson Business of the Year Award (SPD Markets). Other than the 4-5 members of the selection committee it was a complete surprise to all in the room. Nicole can sure keep a secret when required! Dennis Geare was an amazing MC and kept the program entertaining and on-time. To top it off District Governor Doug McDonald gave a moving, inspiration Key Note address that I am sure inspired all the non-Rotarians in the room to consider joining Rotary. All in all it was a great way to showcase Rotary to the community while honoring general community members that give so tirelessly of their time and money. Thank you all for Making a Difference.
Los Barriles Project
Less than a month away now! It's going to be both rewarding and fun and a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians better.
Having last minute thoughts about joining our illustrious group? See Carolyn Feuille!

Trolley Junction - Our Ongoing New Location
In case you missed it: the Board has approved our formal move to Trolley Junction at Northern Queen. Our standard lunch and social mixer price will remain the same at $14 and $5. However after discussions about our new location and options, the Board has voted to suspend the no lunch option.
Our Fifth Thursday of the month has been dark for the last year unless another special event falls that week. We are exploring a "No Host Social" at Nevada City Winery for upcoming 5th Thursdays starting in May. No program, truly just a social hour with our Club, friends and family.

2018 Nevada County Fair Time August 8-12
We need your support and partnership serving at the Fair!
August 8 – 12, 2018
Join us at our Nevada City Rotary booth on Treat Street as we dish up Pulled Pork and Shredded Chicken sandwiches for our annual community service fundraiser. We need to fill 100 openings to cover the 5 days of the Fair. Nevada City Rotarians are expected to work at least 2 shifts during Fair Week -- in the spirit of sharing the load we encourage you to engage friends and colleagues to work with us. Working with friends and family is fun and a great way to serve not just Rotary but our Community! Click to the Latest Schedule icon to check for open shifts.
To schedule to work one or more shifts, send an email to news@ncrotary.org (link sends e-mail) stating which shift you are available and willing to cover. We ask you to be reponsible for finding a replacement in the event you can not make your shift. THANK YOU for all you do in service for Rotary, our Club and our Community!
Treats and Hosts for Girls Who Code
The program will wind down in April. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL who have actively supported this year's Girls Who Code Program. Special shout outs to Trisha Dellis who as Nevada City Superintendent of Schools is our program host and Leslie May, GWC facilitator extraordinaire!
The girls certainly appreciate the snacks ~ it is good to offer something sweet, something salty, including something filling. Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. If you have not signed up for a slot, please contact Nancy. Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!
GWC club meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
