Congratulations Cathy and our Community Award Winners

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Buen Viaje a Los Barriles Celebration

Trolley Junction Restaurant at The Northern Queen
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959

Congratulations Cathy!!!

Cathy Wilcox-Barnes - Volunteer of the Year!!!

Cathy is passionate about her love for our community, its rich history, and the unending network of trails she loves to hike and steward. Cathy continually gives back and enrichens the lives of those around her through countless hours with the Nevada County Historical Society and related libraries and museums (Searls, Foley, her prized Firehouse #1, and more). A walking tour with Cathy is unforgettable because of her wealth of knowledge and eagerness to share. She has and continues to play a key role in being sure the libraries are sustainable and relavent.

As a long time Nevada City Rotarian, Cathy has served many leadership roles including President and Treasurer. She will serve a second term as President this coming year. Last year Cathy combined her love of hiking with her service to Rotary by hiking over 500 miles of the Camino Santigo in Spain to raise moneys to end Polio.

Cathy also served as Nevada City’s first female mayor. Cathy more often than not shows up for whatever occasion with freshly baked cookies or raspberry chocolate mousse cups - just another of her thoughtfully generous ways to share her joy and care for others.

In Sympathy for Gil Gray

We are deeply saddened by the lost of Gilbert (Gil) Gray on March 8, 2019.  Gil was a long time member of our Club and a proud Rotarian.  Our condolences to Gil's family and loved ones.

Yes - Thursday Social is On

We expect a small gathering this week given our Los Barriles crew will be dining at Chris Geyer's home Thursday night. We are planning a casual social to celebrate their good work.

Also note the Area 4 Rotary Herritage Garden is almost done!  President Tom, Dennis and PP/PE Cathy planted roses and other plants on Saturday.  The Area Presidents and PEs showed it off to DG Tina and DGN Roberta last night.  It will be exciting to watch the plants grow and bloom. Ribbon Cutting is being planned for June 23.

Next Week - Area Music Contest - WEDNESDAY

Next week our meeting moves to Wednesday for our Area 4 Music Contest.  We will not meet on Thursday.  Join us at:

Bulbs watch continues at Penzance Park

Over the last few years we have planted 1,500 or so bulbs at Penzance Park.  We will be dancing through daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses soon!!!

Watch this space for flowers popping out all over Penzance Park!

Los Barriles

Nevada City Rotary is leaving this week for our fourth trip to Los Barriles with 14 Rotarians and guests!  What a great trip.  Again we will partner with our Los Barriles Twin Club on a very special project.

Project focus: This year's team is going to a number of schools on Friday and Saturday to do vision and wellness screenings in partnership with East Cape Community Vision Center in Los Barriles. This will enable East Cape Community Vision Center's medical staff to prescribe and fabricate eye glasses with corrective lenses.

For fun: Work includes play too! Chris and Christine Geyer will again host a welcome dinner for all participants; on Sunday go to the beach/swim, outings in off-road vehicles/ATV’s, local tourism, shopping, and getting to know your counterparts in the Los Barriles club

Dates: March 21 travel day, March 22-23 work days at the Vision Center, March 24 R & R day with explorations, shopping, the beach, etc.  Return home March 25 or 26 (return in time to participate in the Area music contest March 27).

Girls Who Code at Seven Hills

Girls Who Code program continues into the new year. The girls love our healthy snacks.  Please signup with Nancy Kemp to serve as host and/or bring healthy snacks a week or more for Girls Who Code participants. If you haven’t done it before, Nancy has great instructions on what to serve.  It is another incredible opportunity to become involved and participate with the youth in our community.
