Thank you to all of you who participated in Rotarians at Work Day! It was a great opportunity for Service Above Self in our community. About 8 of our Club members made it to the Lewis Road Cemetery for an hour of raking pine needles at 8 a.m. Saturday, and 20 of us worked at Pinegrove Cemetery on Red Dog at Boulder from 9 to 1. We raked leaves, leveled graves, covered them with fabric to prevent weeds from growing, and covered them with pea gravel. While we have some aching muscles, we all got a lot of satisfaction from this opportunity to make a small corner of our hometown more attractive and more welcoming to visitors from the California Historic Preservation Foundation Conference next month and on Memorial Day. Special thanks to Community Service Chair Cathy Wilcox-Barnes and committee members PE Eleanor Kenitzer, Vocational Services Chair Nicole Dillard, and Karen Young for organizing the event and covering the meals. The cookies were great Cathy! Bring the leftovers to our Club meeting! If you were not able to participate Saturday, please make a donation to the fine pan at Thursday’s meeting to help cover our costs for the event.

Thank you, Eleanor, for once again pinch-hitting at last week’s Club meeting. I had a business obligation in San Diego (where "June gloom" arrives in April), and I’m grateful for your stepping up at the last minute. I am told the meeting was a most interesting presentation by the leaders of Project Amigo in Colima, Mexico to help youngsters there achieve their highest potential by providing educational opportunities, material support, enrichment activities, and medical and dental services not otherwise available to them. Can you imagine being so committed to an overseas Rotary Project that you retire there to keep it going? Inspiring!

May means lots of District activities for Rotary. May 6th, our meeting will be relocated to the Nevada City Elks Lodge for a lunch to welcome the inbound Group Study Exchange (GSE) team from India. Karen Young is collecting RSVPs to determine our headcount, so let her know if you can attend. May 21-23 is the annual District Conference, a District-wide, end-of-the-year celebration at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. You can register at the conference, but it’s cheaper to register online before May 4th at www.regonline.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?eventid=807265. Sponsorship opportunities are listed there, too. The Club will provide a $50 subsidy if you attend for at least an over-night stay. Treasurer Ellen Davis has the details. Join in the fun!

Dr. Don Williams is hosting this week’s program, a report from newly appointed County Public Health Director Karen Milman, MC, MPH. Given what we recently went through with H1N1 and outbreaks of whooping cough and chicken pox in local schools due to resistance to vaccination efforts among many families, this should be a most interesting. See you at the meeting!

• Nevada County Rotaract is holding their annual Champagne Brunch on Sunday, May 2nd at 11 a.m. in the Union Street Building (the Old Sole Mates retail space at 151 Mill St, Grass Valley). Mix and mingle as you enjoy mimosas, all of your brunch favorites, live music and various champagne cocktails at the Create-Your-Own-Champagne-Cocktail bar. Includes free-flowing champagne and exciting raffle prizes. Tickets are $35 per person. For more information contact Sandra Barrington at sbarrington@snmhf.com or call 530-575-1456.
The Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team from India will be in our area May 5-7. During this time, they will be experiencing vocational tours specific to their individual careers, as well as touring some of our historical sites and experiencing our culture. To welcome them to the area and to learn more about the team members' cultures, vocations, and communities, our club will be hosting a luncheon on Thursday, May 6 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge (instead of our regular meeting at the National Hotel).
The District Conference is the culmination of what 2,700 Rotarians in 53 clubs within our district can accomplish. And this Rotary year, we will all come together on May 21-23 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno to discuss, celebrate, and plan for the future! Early Bird registration and details about the Conference are available at www.rotarydistrict5190.org/districtconferencehome.asp.
