We had a terrific Holiday Party at the National Hotel last Saturday. Thomas A. Coleman, the lovely Ernestine, and the whole NH crew pulled out all the stops for a wonderful 7-course meal: antipasto, lobster tail, tomato basil soup en croute, spinach salad with caramelized walnuts, strawberry sorbet, an entrée of prime rib with horseradish sauce, roasted chicken or salmon with a buerre blanc sauce, and a dessert of crepes, poached pears and fresh strawberries, with accompanying libations. Wow!
We had Christmas music, good cheer, and a chance to visit with fellow Club members and their spouses, significant others, and guests. It was such a convivial evening that my bell even made a return (and I only had to pay a ransom of $10!). We also gathered donations for Christmas gifts to clients of Hospitality House. If you missed that opportunity and would still like to donate, talk to new Club Member Karen Young, who serves on the Hospitality House Board.
Thanks to Tom and his crew for their hospitality, to Community Service Chair Cathy Wilcox-Barnes for her homemade chocolate truffles (yum!), to Club Service Chair Dixie Redfearn, and her committee (Cathy and International Service Chair Carolyn Inglis) for pulling the dinner together and to all of you who were able to attend and make it a festive evening!
In a few matters of note, South Lake Tahoe Rotarian Randy Butler is planning a February 2010 visit to the Kellerman Clinic in Bwindi, Uganda. If you are interested in joining him, he can be contacted at henry_butler@me.com. There will also be a National Immunization Day in India in early 2010, and we will circulate the details on that when we have them.
Note that we are DARK for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, so our next meeting after this week is the first of the new decade – January 7th, with the program TBA.
Our next meeting is this Thursday, at which George Foster will host Lucinda deLorimier, who will be speaking of the impact of technology on our Nevada County libraries. It will be an interesting presentation! We will also formally elect Eleanor Kenitzer as Club President for 2010-11 and her President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, as well. Come see whom she has to nominate.
As this is my last Rotario column of the year, let me take this opportunity to thank all of your for your contributions to our Rotary Club. We are a vibrant, productive group and we accomplish a good deal for our community and the world and each of you is a reason why. Best wishes to you and your family for a festive holiday season and for health and happiness in the New Year! See you at the meeting!
