Despite the fact that President Michael was gone this past week (along with the bell!), the meeting was still fairly lively! PE Eleanor Kenitzer really enjoyed not having to protect the bell and pulled out all of the substitutes (five altogether) to ring ad nauseum. What an impression we must have made on our guest, KVMR General Manager David Levin!
We're certainly an active club! Jack Dinwiddie passed around pictures of pP John Hensley presenting a wheelchair from the Nevada City Rotary Club to our "brother" Rotary club in San Jose Los Cabos, Mexico. He also talked about the green sea turtle release which he and Marty got to see. Pp Nancy Kemp had a sign-up for our Women of Worth Christmas family. Gary Gustafson passed the hat for a neighboring family who lost their house and everything in it when a tree fell on it. And Gayle Denney reported that the first Salvation Army "celebrity" bell ringers collected $434.77. We'll see how well the second group of ringers can do this week in our on-going challenge with the Grass Valley Rotarians.
The Scholarship Committee presented this year's Drew Reynolds Scholarship to Sonja who thanked us and told about her family and her intentions of studying nursing. It was great to meet her and hear her story.
Our meeting with Craft Talks provided us a chance to get better acquainted with Karen Young and Derek Poppell. Karen, in keeping with her time allotment, told about her family and her community involvement, before and after they moved to Nevada County. The commonality between Karen and Derek is that they both have a degree in Communications. Derek announced before his talk that he wanted to speak one minute for each of his 27 years. Needless to say, his wishes were denied! We are glad to have two such active and interesting Rotarians in our Club!
Pp Ben Barretta paid Happy/Sad Bucks -- happy that his daughter finally has a job, but the job is teaching in Iraq! Pp Ellen Davis countered with the fact that she is going to be a great-grandmother! Not to be out-done, George Foster announced that his wife, Christine, is expecting -- a grandchild, that is!
Our next meeting has been moved to this Saturday, December 12th for our Holiday Party. Don't forget to bring along fill-a-stocking items for the Hospitality House guests (playing cards, warm socks, caps, gloves, flashlights, hard candy, thermal t-shirts, etc.)!
