We had a heck of a meeting the week before Thanksgiving! Bob Buhlis hosted John Hardesty (Michael Moore’s brother-in-law) for a program entitled "The making of Capitalism: A Love Story", Michael Moore’s latest "documentary with a point of view." We got a few column inches of coverage in The Union and some walk-in guests as a result. The discussion and the following Q&A reflecting other viewpoints were interesting and demonstrated the diversity of views and commitment to collegiality that is the spirit of our Club. Thanks for setting it up, Bob.
It will be interesting to see what topics our other Cub members bring us! If you have drawn a date to plan a meeting, get your plans to program chair Eleanor Kenitzer as soon as you can. If you have not drawn a date and have a program to suggest, let Eleanor know.
I was happy to report on the Foundation Dinner at the November 19th Club meeting. It was a privilege to honor George & JoAnn Rebane as Major Donors and pP Don Fultz as winner of a Special District Governor’s Award for financial and other contributions to the Foundation. We recognized all our other Paul Harris Fellows this year, too. Keep up the good work, Foundation Chair and pP Bob!
Eleanor Kenitzer reminded us to "save the date" for the Holiday Party, which will be held on the evening of Saturday, December 12th at the National Hotel. We are asking everyone to bring something to stuff stockings for guests of Hospitality House, such as thermal underwear, t-shirts, sweaters, socks, gloves, hats, cards, pencil and paper, hard candy, etc. A complete list of needed items is available at the meeting.
We also have two hands-on community-service events. If you are interested in helping with bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, contact Gayle Denney. If you are interested in a "Food-raising" effort at the local SPD Market to provide non-perishable goods to the Nevada County Food Bank during their season of greatest need, contact Community Service Chair Cathy Wilcox-Barnes.
Membership Committee Co-Chairs Walt Stickel and Austin Farrar are still looking for members to join a Club committee to evaluate a possible Bike Race Breakfast Fundraiser on Sunday, May 16, 2010 – the day the Amgen Tour of California Bicycle Race kicks off from Nevada City. If you are interested in helping develop this proposal, contact Walt or Austin.
Our calendar in December requires a little more thought: we have MOVED the meeting of December 10th to the Holiday Party at the National Hotel on the 12th, and we are DARK for Christmas and New Year's, so our only regular meeting dates in December are the 3rd and 17th.
I have a business commitment next Thursday, so PE Eleanor will be running the meeting. See you all at the Holiday Party on the 12th!
