What a fun meeting we had last week! Thanks to all who contributed. We had an interesting program by the leaders of our Inner Wheel Club – Mary Krill, Bobbie Williams, and Judy Stewart – on their good work and an interesting video about Inner Wheel USA’s support for myoelectric hands for children. In addition, PDG Wyn Spiller made a surprise visit to present us with our long lost original charter for our Club, which disappeared around the time of our move from the Coach House to the National Hotel. Allan Rogers volunteered to remount the charter on archival-quality materials, and we’ll look for a good home for it to be displayed. While she was with us, PDG Wyn happily agreed to induct our two newest members: Donna Smith (Classification: Family Law / Sponsor: Michael C) and Don Williams (Classification: Chiropractic, Sponsor: John Hensley). Even my Bell made a virtual appearance in a photograph with Lucy and Ethel at the chocolate factory!
We also had a report from pP Nancy Kemp on a recent visit with our World Peace Fellow Alejandra, at Berkeley, and from Grass Valley Rotarian Bobbie Swanson who introduced her Club’s Rotary Youth Exchange student from Chile, Valentina, who presented us with a banner from her Rotary District in Santiago. The Grass Valley Club is in need of additional families to host Valentina from February to early June. She speaks very good English and is a student at NU. If you are in a position to open your home to this lovely young lady, contact Youth Services Chair Laura Crookston or Bobbie Swanson of the Grass Valley Club (bsswans@earthlink.net or 477-2803).
pP John Hensley presented a $300 donation to our Club from a client (thanks, John!), and Cathy Anderson-Myers was on hand for her annual report on the Barbara Schmidt-Millar Triathlon, which our club supports. If you’d like to help with the Triathlon, which takes place on September 20th, talk to Cathy Wilcox-Barnes or Gary Gustafson. It’s not too late to sign up to participate, either. The website is: www.bsmtri.org.
We recognized August Rotarian of the Month John Hazelwood for all his good work on the outing to Raley Field for Rotary Day. Thank and congratulate John when you see him. Laura Crookston reported on our successful participation in District 5190’s Literacy Day effort by reading to 16 classes of children in the Nevada City elementary schools. Thanks to all who took time to participate and to Laura for pulling it together on short notice! On September 17th, we will continue with the literacy theme. Our guest will be Alan Archer, Director of the Nevada County Library’s literacy program. See you Thursday!
