I hope you all had a happy and restful Labor Day weekend. Now it’s time to get that post-Labor Day energy on and return to the good work of the Nevada City Rotary Club!
On September 10th, our guests will be Mary Krill and Bobbi Williams, who will give us an update on our Inner Wheel Club (which started life as the "wives club" for Rotary when it was an all-male organization). PE Eleanor Kenitzer will also update us on the Program Committee. We'll induct two new members – Donna Smith (Classification: Family Law / Sponsor: Michael C) and Dr. Don Williams (Classification: Chiropractic, Sponsor: John Hensley). Time permitting, we will have craft talks from some of our newer members.
Thanks, again, to John & Sandra Hensley for inviting all of us to their 30th annual Labor Day party at their place on Scotts Flat Lake. Together with their Memorial Day party, they provide welcome additions to our social calendars and provide chances for good Rotary fellowship without taxing our Club Service Committee!
Congrats and thanks to Youth Committee Chair Laura Crookston for recruiting 16 volunteers to help celebrate Literacy Day on September 8th by reading to children in Nevada City elementary schools. This was a District 5190-wide effort to promote literacy. We will recognize all our volunteers at Thursday’s meeting.
The other Club event this month was our Board meeting (which was on August 31st to spare us a meeting on Labor Day). Highlights of that meeting included a presentation from Club Webmaster Gary Gustafson on plans for an upgraded and refreshed Club website. If you have thoughts or suggestions for the site, let Gary know. Membership Co-chairs Walt Stickel and Austin Farrar also presented a draft mentoring program for new members of the Club. We’d like every new member to have a mentor other than their sponsor so they have two experienced hands to turn to for guidance as they get up to speed on the world of Rotary. If you are interested in serving as a mentor, let Walt or Austin know. We also have two appointments to announce: new member Derek Poppell has agreed to take on the role of Club Photographer and pP Kim Stewart will be stepping in as Sergeant at Arms, filling in for Bob Aydelott, whose new job requires all of his attention at the moment. Thank you Derek and Kim! Good luck with the new gig, Bob! We also picked a Rotarian of the Month for August – to be announced at Thursday’s Club meeting.
The Grass Valley Club is hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange student from Chile and is in need of additional host families from now till December and from December to February. She speaks very good English and is a student at NU. If you are in a position to open your home to this lovely young lady, contact Youth Services Chair Laura Crookston or Bobbie Swanson of the Grass Valley Club (bsswans@earthlink.net or 477-2803).
See you at our Club meeting this Thursday, September 10th back at the National Hotel!
