The Club will be DARK on Thursday, September 3rd to allow a head start on the Labor Day weekend. We will be back to our regular routine on September 10th, when our guests will be Mary Krill and Bobbi Williams, who will give us an update on our Inner Wheel Club (which started life as the "wives club" for Rotary when it was an all-male organization). PE Eleanor Kenitzer will also update us on the Program Committee. We’ll induct at least one new member, Donna Smith (Classification: Family Law, Sponsor: Michael C). And, time permitting, we will have craft talks from some of our newer members. If you want a chance for fellowship with your Rotary friends before the 10th, check out the details below on John and Sandra Hensley’s 30th annual Labor Day bash.
Thanks to Eleanor for sponsoring last week’s program, a report on the Nevada County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore – a retail outlet for used and discount building materials, appliances, furniture, etc. Habitat Boardmember and architect Jim Dierberger made the presentation and let us know of Habitat’s plans to move its offices and ReStore to the property adjacent to the Nevada County recycling facility near the airport in December. An interesting program about an admirable charity with excellent leadership, both locally and nationally. Other highlights of the meeting included the swearing in of our first new members of the year Karen Young, (Classification: Education - Retired) and Derek Poppell (Classification: Insurance). Thanks to Dixie Redfearn and Ben Barretta for sponsoring Karen and pP Pete Brost for sponsoring Derek. We have another prospect for your consideration. John Hensley is sponsoring Dr. Don Williams (Classification: Chiropractic). I am also very pleased to report the return to active membership of pP Kim Stewart (Classification: Manufacturing). If you have any questions or concerns about any of these candidates, please let me or any Boardmember know. If you have other prospective members to suggest, Membership Committee Chairs Walt Stickel and Austin Farrar will be happy to help. We’re halfway to our goal of 10 new members for 2009-10!
Other, lighter moments at the meeting included Robin Milam’s explanation that my missing bell might reappear if I demonstrated some unstated level of devotion to it. Robin has named the bell Lucy (Loose-ie?) and by demonstrating my memories of the I Love Lucy show. Don’t expect any chocolate-eating demonstrations or wine-grape stomping at Club meetings soon. I will, of course, promise to bid at the Club Radio Auction, but not by scratching my nose, and I have no intention of buying any clown paintings!
All Club members are invited to John and Sandra Hensley’s Labor Day party, which starts at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 7th at their place on Scotts Flat Lake. Bring something for a barbecue potluck, a table setting, and your beverage of choice. Dress for volleyball, swimming and boating.
Youth Committee Chair Laura Crookston is looking for volunteers to help celebrate Literacy Day on September 8th – a District-wide effort in Rotary District 5190 – by reading to children in Nevada City elementary schools. If you are free that day and are interested in pitching in, let Laura know.
Thanks again to all who contributed to our Fair Booth Fundraiser, especially committee chair Austin Farrar. Fair attendance was up over 2008 and our gross receipts were up, too. Preliminary numbers show gross receipts of $27,793.25 – higher than the $26.8k and $27.7k we did in 2008 and 2007, respectively. Not bad for a recovering economy! If you couldn’t cover the 2 shifts we ask of all Club members, please contribute something to the fine pan at an upcoming meeting or send us a check to the Club or Club Foundation. I suggest $50 per shift, as that is what we paid the Rotaract Club for the 4 shifts their members covered for us.
Don’t miss our Club meeting on Thursday, September 10th back at the National Hotel. See you there!
