Thanks to all of you who contributed to a successful Fair Booth Picnic the week before last and to a successful Fair Booth fundraiser last week. I missed the Picnic, but have a good report from Int’l Service Committee Chair Carolyn Inglis who chaired the meeting in my absence. Thank you, Carolyn! The picnic was well attended, and we had a fairly equal mix of individuals who paid and those who brought Crayola® / school products. The funds will be used to buy further supplies for back-to-school support for the Nevada City elementary schools.
The winning table setting was put together by Robin & Tom Milam and Eleanor & Aedan Kenitzer (David swears he only sat at the table). They took this year’s fair theme (A Hare’s Magical A-Fair) literally with a tableau of an adorable rabbit choosing among a frog prince, a turtle or a rabbit as suitors. Judges Phil Ruble and Mimi Simmons awarded the most "obtuse interpretation" honor to Austin Farrar and Bob Buhlis for their tablescape "Scarlett O’Hare with Carrots" based on Carol Burnett and her famous Scarlett O’Hara TV skit. Dixie Redfearn and Ben Baretta did a great job on set-up and Tom Coleman and Austin did an equally wonderful job with the pork. There were lots of salads to choose from and decadent desserts to round out the meal.
There was a nice Rotary moment when Robin acknowledged the individuals present who had helped built the original Fair Booth many moons ago – John Hensley, Dave Denney, Ben Baretta, and Pete Brost. Pete also acknowledged all those who helped clean the booth on Saturday complimenting Gayle Denney on her skill with a power washer and noting she brought PDG Dave with her.
We also had an excellent outing to Rotary Day at Raley Field, which was a District-wide fundraiser for Polio Plus. Congrats to John Hazelwood for a job well done in organizing our participation in the event and to Dixie Redfearn, Ben Barreta and the Club Service Committee for the good munchies and beverages on the party bus. And the River Cats even pulled out a win over the New Orleans Zephyrs. Another fine evening of Rotary fellowship; thanks to all who were able to attend!
Thanks, too, to all who contributed to the Fair Booth fundraiser. Whether you worked a shift, cleaned the booth, made phone calls, opened or closed, we much appreciate your contribution. If you were unable to cover your two shifts, please make sure to grease the fine pan at the Club meeting. Special thanks to Committee Chair Austin Farrar, John Taylor (for opening every day), and to Day Captains Ben Barretta, Nicole Dillard, John Woodford and Bob Buhlis.
Our Membership Committee has had a productive summer. In addition to our first new member of the new year – Karen Young, whom I mentioned in my last column, we have four more prospects for your consideration. I am sponsoring Donna Smith (Family Law); Pete Brost is sponsoring Derek Poppell (Insurance); John Hensley is sponsoring Dr. Don Williams (Chiropractic); and I am very pleased to report the return to active membership of pP Kim Stewart (Classification TBA). If you have any questions or concerns about any of these candidates, please let me or any Boardmember know. If you have other prospective members to suggest, Membership Committee Chairs Walt Stickel and Austin Farrar will be happy to hear. Congrats to Walt, Austin and their committee on an excellent start toward of goal of 10 new members for the 2009-10 year. Half way there!
Our next Club meeting is back at the National Hotel on Thursday, August 20th. I will be reporting on the results of our Club Visioning effort back in April, asking for your approval of a new Club motto, seeking your help in the never-ending search for my missing bell, and in naming this column. See you there!
