Thanks to Eleanor Kenitzer, our Program Chair for inviting Grass Valley Rotarian Mike Johnson to come give us an update on Camp RYLA. Mike chaired the local RYLA effort for the last three years and is now helping District Governor Jan Gage with some major fundraising for improvements at the Camp. Thank you Eleanor and Mike!
We had several new guests in attendance last week and will soon be proposing our first new Club member of the year, perhaps in time for District Governor Jan's July 30th visit. If you have someone in your personal or professional life who might make a good Rotarian, invite them to lunch. The Club will host them and they can get to know us a bit and vice versa. If you’d rather someone else extend the invitation, talk to Membership Co-Chairs Walt Stickel and Austin Farrar and their Committee can pitch in. A highlight of the meeting was pP Don Fultz’s report on his recent trip to Europe and his grandson, Alexander Rossi’s recent successes there on the Formula one track. It’s amazing what that kid has accomplished in his 17 years!
On July 30th, DG Jan will bestow our annual Quiet Rotarian Award at that meeting. This award recognizes someone who can always be counted on to contribute to the work and fun of the Club, evinces the motto "Service Above Self," and is understated about his or her contributions. The four officers (me, PE Eleanor Kenitzer, Treasurer Ellen Davis and Secretary Dave Kenitzer) will make our choice late this month. If you have any suggestions, let any of us know.
Make sure you join us for our next Club meeting on Thursday, July 23rd. Our program is "The Cornish are Coming!" Sponsored by Program Chair Eleanor Kenitzer in conjunction with the 15th Annual Gathering of Cornish Cousins in Nevada City and Grass Valley, we will hear from a Cornish Rotarian. It should be a fun and interesting event. Be there!
Thanks to pP Nancy Kemp for organizing our first service opportunity of the new year at the Nevada City Children’s Festival on Friday, July 17th in Pioneer Park. Nevada City Rotarians moved tables the night before, covered the tables with newsprint the morning of, and cleaned up the park after the festival is over. Thanks, too, to our Fair Booth Maintenance Committee (Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, Larry Undercoffer, John Taylor, Pete Brost, and Ben Barretta), for their work preparing for the upcoming County Fair. Speaking of the Fair, if you have not signed up for your two shifts (or one shift if you bring a friend over age 15), contact Austin Farrar, our Fair Booth Fundraising Committee Chair. See you Thursday!
