Last week’s meeting saw a very good turnout for the Inaugural Meeting of the New Year. Thanks for turning out and showing your appreciation for pP Bob Buhlis and his outgoing Board and to give the incoming Board your best wishes. We are grateful to Superior Court Judge Tom Anderson, who did us the honor of swearing in our new Board.
We heard presentations from the chairs of the Club’s newly formed Standing Committees: Club Service & PR (Dixie Redfearn & Nicole Dillard), Community Service (Cathy Wilcox-Barnes), Membership (Walt Stickel & Austin Farrar), Youth & Vocational (Laura Crookston & Nicole Dillard), and International & Foundation (Carolyn Inglis & Bob Buhlis). We are requesting all active members to join at least one Standing Committee this year so you can contribute to your area of interest in the work of the Club. Club of 85 members are invited to participate, as well. If you haven’t yet told a committee chair you want to be on his or her committee, please given them a call or send them an email so you can get your first choice of committee. Come join in the fun!
A highlight of the meeting was the opportunity to recognize Walt Stickel, a new member last year and Membership Committee Co-Chair this year, as Rotarian of the Month for June. The Club contributed $100 toward Walt’s Paul Harris Fellowship to recognize his work on the Demotion. Walt picked and recorded an entertaining mix of songs, helped set up the event, entertained us all on the bocce ball court, and was one of the last to leave after helping tear down the event. Thank you and congratulations, Walt!
We will be having our annual visit from District Governor Jan Gage on July 30th. Jan will bestow our annual Quiet Rotarian Award at that meeting. This award recognizes someone who can always be counted on to contribute to the work and fun of the Club, evinces the motto "Service Above Self," and is understated about his or her contributions. The four officers (me, PE Eleanor Kenitzer, Treasurer Ellen Davis & Secretary Dave Kenitzer) will make our choice late this month. If you have any suggestions, let any of us know.
Make sure you join us for our next Club meeting on Thursday, July 16th. Mike Johnson will present a program about the just-completed Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). Our Club sponsored two young people from our community. This is a very powerful experience for our young people, and we hope to have one or both of them in attendance to let us know in their own words what this opportunity meant to them. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the power and goodwill our Rotary work generates!
Just a reminder that our first service opportunity of the new year is the Nevada City Children’s Festival, slated for Friday, July 17th in Pioneer Park. We move table the night before, cover the tables with newsprint the morning of, and clean up the park after the festival is over. If you’d like to be involved in this heart-warming opportunity to serve the youth of our community, contact pP Nancy Kemp. Our Fair Booth Maintenance Committee is also hard at work preparing for the upcoming County Fair. If you have time and energy to help the Committee, contact Pete Brost, Larry Undercoffer or Cathy Wilcox-Barnes.
See you Thursday!
