Once again, Nevada City Rotarians dedicated time and energy
to make our community just a little bit better. Rotarians
at Work Day was a huge success with about 20 members
cleaning, pruning, weeding and raking Penzance Park
last Saturday. Forty-eight of the 53 clubs in District 5130
had community projects that day as did thousands of clubs throughout
the world. Check Tuesday’s Union
for details on the projects done by the other clubs in Area
4. Great job, everyone! Thanks to Community Service Chair Gary
Gustafson for organizing the event, Cathy Wilcox-Barnes
for her planning assistance and Austin Farrar
for arranging the morning snacks and lunch. By the way, it should
be noted that there were twice as many women as men from our
club laboring over weed cutters, cutting blackberry vines and
hauling branches!
The GSE Team arrived from Italy
on Sunday after delays in Rome, Pittsburgh and an unexpected
layover in Denver. Those of you who joined us for lunch on Monday
heard their interesting stories about their homes, families
and jobs. Thanks to Grass Valley member Anita Daniels
for coordinating the scheduling of tours and events for the
Rotary Team Leader and the four young professionals. Thanks,
too, to our International Avenue Chair Carolyn Inglis
for her part in the coordination efforts.
On another note about GSE: the next exchange for District 5190
is with India in January. Our own PP
Pearce Boyer has applied for the Team Leader position
for that trip with full board support. We’re keeping our
fingers crossed for you, Pearce! How are you coming along learning
the native language?
District Conference is just two weeks away,
but it is not too late to register for part or all of it. Space
is still available for the golf tournament on the 14th and to
enter the photography contest (the theme is "Make Dreams
Real" of course!). I’m pleased to announce that Bobbie
Williams and her son Ken will be at
conference on Sunday morning during the remembrance portion
of conference to honor our own Ken Williams.
If you can, plan on attending at least that session as Bobbie
presents a flower in Ken’s memory, his photo is shown
and his contributions to Rotary are acknowledged.
Remember our meeting was moved this week because of the GSE
Luncheon; we return to regular scheduling next week.
May 7th will also be a meeting where the emphasis
will be on the Paul Harris Society –
a good day to bring in those rolled coins!
