Once again, our dedicated Nevada City Rotarians went all out to make our annual Radio Auction a successful event. As of this writing, I am advised that we will net around $17,000! Thanks to everyone who worked the event and helped with obtaining auction items. Special thanks to Carolyn Inglis and David Kenitzer as well as their committee for their hard work and a job well done.

April is a busy month. This week, we will have our regular meeting. However, we will be upstairs in the Rector Room (if you don’t like stairs, enter from the Spring Street side of the hotel). As mentioned in last week’s Rotario, our speaker will be LCDR Ted Robinson, USNR-Retired. He will share his personal experiences with President John Kennedy to include his involvement in rescuing JFK from behind enemy lines after his PT-109 was attacked. In addition, his stories will include the conversations they had while they shared a hospital tent after the Commander was also injured. Autographed copies of LCDR Robinson’s book, Water in My Veins: The Pauper Who Helped Save a President, will be available for purchase. This is a program you won’t want to miss!

Saturday, April 25th is Rotarians at Work Day where all clubs in District 5190 will have a community work project. Ours is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Penzance Park (across from the Chevron Station on Sacramento Street), where we will clean up the area to make that entrance to Nevada City more pleasing. Bring your gloves & tools and plan on having a little fun while working with other Rotarians. Coffee and light fare will be available in the morning; sandwiches and cold drinks will be served at Noon.

The Group Study Exchange Team from Italy arrived on Sunday the 19th and will begin their five days of activities in western Nevada County. The luncheon will be held at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, April 27th at the Nevada City Elk’s Lodge. This is our opportunity to hear from these young people from the recent earthquake stricken part of southwestern Italy. If you haven’t registered to attend yet, you may contact PE Michael Colantuono to see if space is still available. Please note that there will be no meeting on April 30th because of the importance of good attendance at the GSE meeting.

If you haven’t registered for District Conference slated May 15-17 at the Peppermill in Reno, it’s not too late. Let’s have a great attendance to honor DG Wyn’s very successful Rotary year!

RADIO AUCTION GOOFS: Bob "Mr KNCO" Breck (left) tries to make sense of the cable spaghetti. When asked about a problem, Gary Gustafson (center) points to the unsuspecting new guy, Walt Stickel. And no caption is needed for the picture on the right. Photos/D Kenitzer

Rotarians at Work Day: On April 25th, we will join Rotarians around the globe in a visible hands-on project to make our corner of the world a better place. Our project is to help the City transform Penzance Park (at the corner of Sacramento St & Adams St) from an over-grown lot into a pocket park. Contact Gary Gustafson for more details.
2009 District Conference
: The District Conference is the culmination of what the 2,700 Rotarians in 53 clubs within our district accomplish. And this Rotary year, we will all come together on May 15-17 at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno to discuss, celebrate, and plan for the future! Early Bird registration and details about the Conference are available at www.rotarydistrict5190.org/districtconferencehome.asp.
Club Visioning: Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 9th from 9am to noon at the Superintendent of Schools office. During this time, the District Visioning Team will lead us through a brainstorm session to help us create a strategic plan. Any member interesting in helping to shape our club's future is encouraged to attend.
