This is Radio Auction Week, and our Auction Committee is hard at work finalizing the details of producing this major fundraiser for Nevada City Rotary. It’s not too late to submit those last minute auction items, although it is too late to make the newspaper insert which was published on Monday in The Union. We have some 230 items valued at over $85,000! About 225 (nearly $36,000 in value) of those items were obtained by club members. What a great job this year! If all goes well, we will do well Saturday when the auction takes place on KNCO from 10 am to 2 pm. If you can’t be there, be sure and listen and heed the notion, "bid often, bid high" and ask your friends to do the same. Don’t forget, our meeting for the 16th is MOVED because of the auction, so no lunch meeting this week.

Last week’s program was a lot of fun. The speakers were Gary Wright and Lowell Robinson from Foothill Theatre Company. Gary entertained us with stories of his experience as a young actor just entering the profession at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival. In a most amusing way, he told us about his first job working with the horses in one of the productions where he had to "prepare" the animals to not leave messes on stage. He then, along with FTC’s president Lowell Robinson, gave us an update on shows and fundraisers currently running or planned for the near future. Thanks Stacy Butler for arranging a good belly laugh and encouragement that the theatre is on the mend.

Our program for our meeting on the 23rd will be presented by LCMD Theodore M. Robinson USNR-Retired. He was near the PT 109 that was skippered by then Naval Lieutenant John Kennedy, and a week later was involved in JFK’s rescue from behind enemy lines. LCMD Ted was the first to talk to Kennedy and his crew and later shared a hospital tent with him after he was also injured. They became fast friends and JFK shared some of his intimate thoughts and visions. You won’t want to miss this exciting program arranged for by Shirl Mendonca.

  Club News
Radio Auction Update: This year's Radio Auction is this Saturday (April 18) at the Superintendent of Schools Office (112 Nevada City Hwy, NC). Be sure to encourage friends/family to listen to KNCO AM830 or www.knco.com (if out of the area) from 9am to 2pm and call (530) 478-6090 to bid on any of the 200+ items. And remind them to bid early and bid high!
Rotarians at Work Day: On April 25th, we will join Rotarians around the globe in a visible hands-on project to make our corner of the world a better place. Our project is to help the City transform Penzance Park (at the corner of Sacramento St & Adams St) from an over-grown lot into a pocket park. Contact Gary Gustafson for more details.
2009 District Conference
: The District Conference is the culmination of what the 2,700 Rotarians in 53 clubs within our district accomplish. And this Rotary year, we will all come together on May 15-17 at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno to discuss, celebrate, and plan for the future! Early Bird registration and details about the Conference are available at www.rotarydistrict5190.org/districtconferencehome.asp.
Club Visioning: Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 9th from 9am to noon at the Superintendent of Schools office. During this time, the District Visioning Team will lead us through a brainstorm session to help us create a strategic plan. Any member interesting in helping to shape our club's future is encouraged to attend.
