Last week’s Area Speech Contest at the Nevada City Elk’s Lodge was an enjoyable afternoon with five high school students doing their best to present a winning speech. Jessie Triplett, the young man representing the Grass Valley Club, will give the other contestants a run for their money at the District 5190 Contest at the District Conference in May. His experience as an actor and a stand-up comedian helped him involve his audience and keep their attention while he made some excellent points on how to "Make Dreams Real".

Over the weekend, eight of the 2009-2010 Board of Directors members attended District Assembly. With the new format for assembly, it was an event that lasted most of the day providing time for each area of concern to go into great depth. We all came away with some new ideas while having a good time. Some initial planning was started that will be carried on at the board retreat that PE Michael Colantuano will be conducting in late May. The new year is already well underway to becoming a very successful one!

Members Nicole Dillard and Austin Farrar represented our club at the RYLA interviews held at both Nevada Union and Bear River High Schools. Two outstanding young women were selected for sponsorship from our club: Denise Jhu from Bear River and Tara Sherman from NU. Both candidates will be invited to a meeting soon so that we can meet them and learn more about them. Perhaps we can get them to return after RYLA to have them share what they learned.

Be sure and check out the special Radio Auction insert in The Union next Tuesday. Once again a bang up job has been done by the Auction Committee. Be prepared to hear from the committee on the number of auction items and the dollar amount! By the way, it’s not too late to get items turned in, but it is too late to make the newspaper or advance radio publicity.

This week, Stacy Butler will host our program – don’t be surprised if it includes some special entertainment from Foothill Theatre Company!

Rotarians at Work Day: On April 25th, we will join Rotarians around the globe in a visible hands-on project to make our corner of the world a better place. Our project is to help the City transform Penzance Park (at the corner of Sacramento St & Adams St) from an over-grown lot into a pocket park. Contact Gary Gustafson for more details.
2009 District Conference
: The District Conference is the culmination of what the 2,700 Rotarians in 53 clubs within our district accomplish. And this Rotary year, we will all come together on May 15-17 at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno to discuss, celebrate, and plan for the future! Early Bird registration and details about the Conference are available at www.rotarydistrict5190.org/districtconferencehome.asp.
Club Visioning: Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 9th from 9am to noon at the Superintendent of Schools office. During this time, the District Visioning Team will lead us through a brainstorm session to help us create a strategic plan. Any member interesting in helping to shape our club's future is encouraged to attend.
