Last week's presentation by Ruth Schwartz
("Creative Problem Solving") hosted by Bob Aydelott
was a welcome refresher course for me. Most of us have heard this
process before, but it helped me to consider a problem that I
have to solve. I'm up to the "consider my choices" phase!
Next Thursday evening, February 19, is an area
wide mixer at the Holiday Inn Express beginning
at 5:30 pm. All members are invited and encouraged
to bring spouses and especially someone you think might be interested
in Rotary. Our five clubs are working together to build membership.
Each president is expected to tell two truths and one untruth
(The 4-way test doesn't apply - it's a game!). Come and see if
you can figure out what my "untruth" is! There is no
charge for admission or refreshments.
Are you working on obtaining your auction items? We'll get a report
from the auction committee on where we stand to date at our regular
meeting this week. Some imaginative items have made the list so
far - can you top them?
Our Area 4 e-Waste project to raise funds for
polio eradication in Asia and Africa is coming right along. It
is our objective to raise some of the $15,000
our area is expected to raise as a community service project over
the next three years. RI President D.K. Lee has
requested every club, worldwide, raise at least $1,000 each for
next three years to help Make Dreams Real for
the welfare of children. Four to six volunteers are needed from
1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 22 to work at
our drop-off station behind the Nevada City SPD. Please help!
NO LIFTING.
How about a trip to Minden, Nevada? Remember a couple of years
ago when a contingent from the Minden Rotary Club
came to Nevada City and a number of us went to Off BroadStreet
Theatre for a fun evening? It's time to visit our fellow and fellowette
Rotarians and support their Beast Feast on February
28. Details were in a flyer left on your table last week;
more will be available this week.
At our board meeting last week, it was agreed that we would support
our Rotaract members with funds to help pay their
District Conference registration fees (don't worry, they will
earn it helping out at conference!). Also, a donation is being
sent to assist with expenses after the death of two RYE
students and injuries of seven others in Portland after the fatal
shooting last month. We also are supporting a district wide public
relations grant that should make more people aware of
the good works we do. Once again, our club will assist financially
with those attending District Conference in May.
You can register through the district website. The sooner you
register, the cheaper it is, plus the first 200 Rotarians to register
will receive bonus beads for the Mardi Gras party!

Radio Auction Update: We will be holding our
12th Annual Radio Auction on Saturday,
April 18! As of Wednesday evening, we have received 54
donated items worth $7,781! For the fastest processing,
please remember to fax your donation forms to 323-5828. Or hand
them in at the weekly meeting. Just keep 'em coming!
Club Visioning: Mark your calendars for Saturday,
May 9th from 9am to noon
at the Superintendent of Schools office. During
this time, the District 5190 Visioning Team will be leading us through
a brainstorm session to help us strategically plan for the future.
All members are welcome to attend.
The Fight Against Polio: In recognizing Rotary's impressive
fundraising success and steadfast commitment to polio eradication,
Bill Gates, Jr. announced last week that his foundation
has decided to increase its challenge grant by $255 million
-- for a total of $355 million! By accepting the
increase, Rotary also accepts the challenge to raise an additional
$100 million in matching funds by June 30, 2012 and drives the combined
Rotary and Gates Foundation partnership's commitment to a total
of $555 million. All of the resulting $555 million will be spent
in support of immunization activities carried out by the Global
Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in polio-affected countries.
The initiative is spearheaded by Rotary, the World Health Organization
(WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
UNICEF.
