Last week's program, "The Power
of Prevention" presented by Nancy Ryan,
proved to be an eye opener. Nancy pointed out that with just a
few simple and inexpensive tests, steps can be taken to avoid
health issues that can be fatal.
In two weeks, Thursday evening, February 19,
Area 4 is sponsoring a Mixer at the Holiday Inn
Express to acquaint potential members with Rotary. Each of the
five clubs will have an information table available, and the program
will be a "2 truths, 1 untruth" game where each president
must announce two truths and one untruth about themselves. The
idea is to get people talking and asking questions to try to figure
out which is the untruth. Each Rotarian is encouraged to attend,
bring their spouse or companion and as many guests as you like.
Our membership is up by two, but we need to continue to strengthen
our membership and recruit new members. Not all clubs are doing
so well, so we decided to work together with this event. Please
mark your calendar and plan on attending.
Rotary at Work Day is coming up on Saturday,
April 25th. If you haven't already signed up and given
Cathy Wilcox-Barnes your tee shirt size, please
do soon - the order deadline is rapidly approaching. Some suggestions
have been made on what our project will be, and we'll make a decision
at our board meeting this evening.
The Area 4 E-Waste Project is Sunday,
February 22nd. The Nevada City drop-off location will
be in the back and below SPD. A flyer with the details will be
available at this week's meeting. Four to six volunteers will
be needed to work the 1 to 4 pm shift. There will be no lifting
of items donated - that is all done by the E-Waste staff. Our
role is to be a support staff.
Have you considered joining the Bequest Society?
With as little as a $10,000 commitment on your life insurance
policy, you become a member and ensure The Rotary Foundation is
funded far into the future. As part of the Every Rotarian Every
Year program, consider a monthly contribution for your Paul Harris
directly from a credit card or checking or savings account. We
are at an average of $75 per member towards Foundation giving
for the year - those of you who have not made at least a $100
contribution, please consider doing so. Have you filled your jar
with spare change that pP Nancy Kemp keeps talking
about?
A date to keep in mind: Saturday, May 9. This
will be our Visioning session led by the D5190
Visioning team. Also, mark your calendars for Monday,
April 27, for the GSE Luncheon. This
year, the team is coming from Italy. We may also
have our Peace Fellow present. It should be a very enjoyable day!

Radio Auction. As of Wednesday evening, we have received
38 donated items worth $5,641! For the fastest

The Fight Against Polio: In recognizing Rotary's impressive
fundraising success and steadfast commitment to polio eradication,
Bill Gates, Jr. announced last week that his foundation
has decided to increase its challenge grant by $255 million
-- for a total of $355 million! By accepting the
increase, Rotary also accepts the challenge to raise an additional
$100 million in matching funds by June 30, 2012 and drives the combined
Rotary and Gates Foundation partnership's commitment to a total
of $555 million. All of the resulting $555 million will be spent
in support of immunization activities carried out by the Global
Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in polio-affected countries.
The initiative is spearheaded by Rotary, the World Health Organization
(WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
UNICEF.
