In case you missed the newspaper on Monday, I'll mention that the Outstanding Business Person of the Year award went to our on District Governor, Wyn Spiller! She was recognized for her contributions to the community, her leadership and for the role model she is to all of us. It was an honor to present the award to her, and she was totally surprised. Thanks to Vocational Chair Nicole Dillard for her work in the selection process, Steve Spiller who convinced Wyn to attend the Chamber dinner, and to all of you who nominated candidates.

A message from DG Wyn Spiller, "By now most of you have heard of the terrible shooting in Portland OR in which two students were killed and seven injured, several of them involved in RYE. The two victims were an inbound student from Peru and an outbound student preparing to go abroad next year, three of the others injured were inbounds to D5100. It is such a heartbreaking tragedy and one that was completely random, a situation of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved." I can forward a copy of the press release from DG Dennis J. Wickham, MD (D5100) to anyone interested. Also, if interested, memorial funds are being established.

Congratulations and welcome to Walt Stickle, our newest member, who was inducted last week. If you haven't met Walt, please make sure you introduce yourself to him.

Last week's program, hosted by pP Fultzee and presented by Stephen Gonsalves, was on Batwa Cultural Preservation. As usual, our Rotarians and guests were interested in this excellent presentation and asked questions of interest to us all.

PE Michael Colantuono reports that the District 5190 Visioning Team will be here on Saturday morning, May 9, so save the date. All members are invited.

Keep those auction donations coming in! Each week we get report on the Rotarians who have obtained auction items, the donor and the value of each item along with a grand total. Is your name on the list yet?

LAST WEEK: Our newest member, Walt Stickel (pictured with wife Sandy), was inducted with a classification of Technology Project Management. Stephen Gonsalves (center) gave a vivid presentation on the Batwa Culture. For those who can't figure out how to steal The Bell (right), you just need to get a little more creative.   Radio Auction Update: Mark your calendars for April 18! We will be holding our 12th Annual Radio Auction. As of Wednesday evening, we have received 31 donated items worth $4,483! The Fight Against Polio: In recognizing Rotary's impressive fundraising success and steadfast commitment to polio eradication, Bill Gates, Jr. announced yesterday that his foundation has decided to increase its challenge grant by $255 million -- for a total of $355 million! By accepting the increase, Rotary also accepts the challenge to raise an additional $100 million in matching funds by June 30, 2012 and drives the combined Rotary and Gates Foundation partnership's commitment to a total of $555 million. All of the resulting $555 million will be spent in support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in polio-affected countries. The initiative is spearheaded by Rotary, the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.
