Rotary has many seasons. For us, we are entering
"Auction Season". Our hard working
and dedicated Auction Committee started us off last week with
our kickoff for our annual major fundraiser. Each of us was challenged
to be creative with our solicitation for auction items in these
difficult economic times. We were asked what we can do to find
auction items of interest and value without it becoming a huge
sacrifice for the donors. Is your imagination at work? Every member
is expected to do their part and obtain at least one new donor
in addition to renewing their former auction items.
We will have weekly updates on our progress on auction items through
both the newsletter and at our meetings. Your commitment is being
counted on!
pP Ben Barretta has organized the first Fireside
Chat for new members that we have had in several years.
It was at 6 pm on Wednesday, January 21st in the Rector Room at
the National Hotel. pP Nancy Kemp was instrumental
in the planning which was well attended. Thanks to Ben, Nancy
and host Tom Coleman for this extremely important
opportunity for new members and their mentors. Education and understanding
of Rotary and our objectives is key to membership involvement
and retention.
Watch for the schedule for the Group Study Exchange
(GSE) visit to our District. Club International Service Chair
Carolyn Inglis will keep us posted. This year's
team is from Italy; we are looking forward to their visit to one
of our meetings.
This week, the program is hosted by pP King Don "Fultzee"
Fulz -- "Batwa Cultural Preservation"
is to be presented by Stephen "Blackie" Gonsalves.
This program should be of great interest since we have a tremendous
concern for lifestyle improvements for the people of Africa.
We are off to a good start with attendance in 2009; let's keep
up the good work!

The Fight Against Polio: In recognizing Rotary's
impressive fundraising success and steadfast commitment to polio
eradication, Bill Gates, Jr. announced yesterday
that his foundation has decided to increase its challenge grant
by $255 million -- for a total of $355
million! By accepting the increase, Rotary also accepts
the challenge to raise an additional $100 million in matching funds
by June 30, 2012 and drives the combined Rotary and Gates Foundation
partnership's commitment to a total of $555 million. All of the
resulting $555 million will be spent in support of immunization
activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative
(GPEI) in polio-affected countries. The initiative is spearheaded
by Rotary, the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF. Radio Auction: Mark
your calendars for April 18! We will be holding
our 12th Annual Radio Auction. More details will
be provided at today's Radio Auction Kickoff...
