This week, DG Wyn Spiller will make her official visit and will be the speaker for our program. Prior to our meeting, she will meet with the Board for a review of our program and goals, provide some direction, and give us a status report on District 5190 activities. ADG Pam Yazell will also be present and will introduce DG Wyn. Let’s show our support with an overwhelming attendance!

Joe Limov, Principal of Seven Hills Middle School, gave us an update on the Nevada City School District last week. Hosted by pP Terry Boyer, Joe pointed out that although student enrollment is declining, district students are meeting, and some cases exceeding, goals and established standards. The district has won a number of awards, has a bicycle recycle program, is involved in several community service volunteer projects, and has its own foundation to fund art, technology, music and curriculum.

Coming up on November 6 is the Foundation Dinner. PDG Dr. Joe Serra, an orthopedic surgeon, will be the Key Note Speaker. His topic is, "An Update on Polio Eradication - The Crawlers of Malawi". If you haven’t registered to attend, you may do so at this week’s meeting or call IPP Nancy Kemp. It is not too late to be recognized at the dinner for a Paul Harris - just let Nancy or Shirl Mendoca know that you have met the $1,000 requirement, but have not yet been acknowledged by RI. Remember our luncheon meeting is moved to 6 pm at the Miners Foundry for this Nevada City Rotary Club hosted event.

Our pilot project to collect old cell phones is underway, so bring your discarded phones to the next meeting. Ask around, maybe you could bring in a whole bag full! Also, keep in mind our February 2009 Area 4 Polio Plus project to collect unwanted electronic equipment. Soon we will have a storage space to start the collection. A full list of equipment to collect is still not available, but we do know that it includes curling irons and toaster ovens to computers and televisions.

Next week, PDG Dave Denney will host PDG Chuck Elizondo who will present, "Raising Dairy Goats in Uganda". With the implementation of our 3-H Grant under the expert management of pP Don Fultz, this is a timely topic that you won’t want to miss!

If you have a nomination for the Vocational Service Award, please submit it to Nicole Dillard at Thursday's meeting; recommendation forms will be available.

Vocational Service Award
: Nominations for our club’s Vocational Service Award are being accepted. The award is given to the NC Rotary Club member who best exemplifies his or her professional classification for the year. Please contact Nicole Dillard for more details or for the nomination form.
Foundation Dinner: The Foundation Dinner is November 6th at the Miners Foundry. Social hour starts at 6:00, and the cost will be around $30 per person. Since Polio Eradication is one of the main goals for the Foundation this year, Dr Joe Serra will be talking about his work with polio victims in Africa.
