Last week’s visit to Grass Valley Rotary Club’s
Agriculture Appreciation Day at the Fairgrounds was
well attended by Nevada City Rotarians. Jack Parnell
presented an enthusiastic talk about his history in agriculture
and his constant love for the industry. His emphasis was on
encouraging us to continue supporting agriculture, especially
in Nevada County. The meeting was held next to the arena for
the Draft Horse Classic after a great barbeque
lunch. Several Ag awards were presented which included the presentation
of the first annual Aggie of the Year Award
to Fairgrounds Director Ed Scofield.
This week, we will hear about the upcoming Nevada City election
on whether to continue electing the City Clerk and Treasurer
or whether they should be appointed by the City Council. Former
Mayor Steve Cottrell will give the background on the
measures. His comments will be followed by City Clerk
Niel Locke and Treasurer George Foster
who will present arguments favoring continuing the current practice
of election by the citizens of Nevada City.
Next week, we will have the honor of a visit by PDG
Al Frumkin, who will discuss membership with an emphasis
on recruiting and retention as a responsibility of each Rotarian.
Al is always entertaining – don’t miss this one!
Planning is in the works for a number of upcoming events. One
is the February 22 collection day for electronic
equipment to raise funds to help eradicate polio in
the four remaining counties where polio exists. A "mini"
collection day will be announced soon to collect and store equipment
that you have been planning on discarding. Details for our cell
phone collection will also be announced following our October
board meeting – save your old cell phones for that fund
raising event, too. Both of these events are a chance to raise
funds for good causes and require very little work!
Just received word: September 30 is the last
date to sign up for Rotary Academy. NC Rotary
will refund at least a part of the $50 registration fee for
all club members who successfully graduate from the Academy.
See David Kenitzer or me for more information.
And lastly, you probably know where your children are, but
do you know where your pin is? Is it on your lapel where it
belongs?
