Fellow Rotarians, we are meeting back at the National
this Thursday, June 19th. This will be my last 'official' meeting
as your president. I have heard from an anonymous source that
the bell will be returned and that you will all be on your best
behavior at our meeting. [Editor's Note: Yeah, right!]
The Rotary International Convention is happening
in LA this week. As you remember, DG Vic pledged
to bring 5190 books, and at last count, our
district with its generosity helped push him to that total.
The mountain of books in LA is expected to reach 250,000! The
books will be given to children in Southern California and Nevada.
The International website www.rotary.org
has great stories about the convention. The opening session
included a Presentation of the Flags of the
200 countries and geographical areas where Rotary has a presence.
When I attended the convention last year in Salt Lake City,
I remember this same ceremony. As the country was named and
the flag flashed on a gigantic screen, there was a cheer from
the convention attendees from that particular country. Countries
like the United Kingdom, Japan
and the U.S. of course have large ‘delegations’
with lots of people cheering; others have just a few. The one
country, however, that surprised me with a very large cheer
was Mongolia. Who knew they had Rotary clubs
there and that so many of them would have been attending the
convention?!
This convention is the kickoff for Rotary’s pledge to
match the $100 million given to Rotary from
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Our
outgoing RI President Wilf Wilkinson thought
it was very significant that the challenge grant to fight
polio was given to Rotary before we had even raised
one penny of matching funds. I’m sure we will hear more
about that this next year.
I talked to our DG Elect Wyn Spiller, who is
at the convention. She reported that in the House of
Friendship, there were various Rotary items to buy,
including a hand-knotted Rotary rug. Maybe Tom
could invest in one of these for the foyer at the National...
