Nancy's Nuggets

Our Music Contest last week at the Oddfellows Hall was, as always, an entertaining event. We express our thanks to Mike Colantuono for chairing this event and special thanks go to our judges and timekeeper - Nicole Dillard, Eleanor Kenitzer, David Kenitzer, and Miriam Keene. Great job team!

Our contest winner, Marina Sanford, will go on to the Area Contest this Sunday, March 16th at 2:00 pm at the Holbrooke in Grass Valley. Let’s have a good turnout to support Marina. By the way, Marina was our area winner last year and came in 3rd at the District Music Contest. Good luck Marina this year!

And a gentle reminder that we are still collecting books for two drives – the first is our drive to support District Governor Vic’s challenge to bring 5190 books to the RI Convention. We have 42 books so far and have pledged to bring 100 to our District Conference, so if you have not yet brought a new or gently used children’s book to our meeting yet, please bring one! The other book drive is in support of our Rotaract Club, who will donate books they collect to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation “Read Me A Story” program. Two locations where they are accepting books are Citizens Bank and The Union. This drive also is for new or gently used children’s books.

And now, for the important reminder – this last year we have given $14,500 in scholarships to 10 new recipients and 6 returning recipients. The life stories of these kids are touching and their need for a scholarship is always great. We are fortunate to be able to help these deserving individuals. The funds that we use for these scholarships are raised by our Auction Proceeds, and this year our donations gathered by club members are down 30% from last year. What this means is that we will not have as much money to distribute in the form of scholarships next year. You all received an email on Tuesday with a list of donors from last year who have not yet been contacted – if one of these donors belongs to you, please make that call.

The cutoff for donations is today (March 13th) if you want your donation listing to appear in the Circular in the Union, but WE WILL TAKE DONATIONS AFTER THAT DATE. Think of those kids, make the call, we can succeed in keeping our scholarship funds high!

99th Annual Rotary International Convention: As RI President Wilf Wilkinson says, "a Rotary convention is an event like no other", and this year's RI Convention is only going to be 450 miles away at the Los Angeles Convention Center. June 15-18, 2008 is just around the corner, so please take a look at the Convention Brochure available on the RI Website: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/c08_brochure.pdf.
