Nancy's Nuggets

We will be meeting at the Odd Fellows Hall this week, since our program is the Music Contest. Please plan to attend to support the youth of our community in their quest to win an award for their talent. Our last year’s club winner went all the way to the District Contest!

March is Rotary Literacy Month. If you looked at our Rotarian Magazine for March, you will find an interesting article about "The Book Lady" who grew up in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains and was the fourth of 12 children. Much of her family could not read, including her father. In 2007, "The Book Lady" provided more than 4.5 million books to preschoolers in 43 states and provinces across the United States and Canada. This Lady is Country Music Hall of Famer Dolly Parton, who in 1996 under the auspices of her foundation, formed the Imagination Library which provides one free book per month to every child from birth to age five in a participating community whose parents sign up for the program. I don’t think Dolly is a Rotarian, but 100 U.S. and Canadian Rotary clubs help defray the cost of books and mailing since her Imagination Library is among the resources recommended in Rotary’s Every School a Star literacy kit.

Our own local Rotaract Club has begun a book drive in support of early childhood literacy in our community. From March 3rd thru March 31st, the Rotaractors are asking the community as well as Rotarians to donate new or gently used children’s books (6 months to 6 years) to these locations: Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, Citizens Bank of Northern CA, The Rood Center, Twin Ridges Homestudy, Deer Creek Elementary, Placer Title Company (GV and Lake of the Pines) and the Union. Donated books will be given to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation "Read Me A Story" program, which provides books to children at well baby check-ups.

And... for our own 'book drive' to support DG Vic’s challenge to bring 5190 books to the RI Convention in Los Angeles, we already have 42 books! We’re trying to get to 100, so if you have not brought your children’s book to our club meeting, BRING ONE!

99th Annual Rotary International Convention: As RI President Wilf Wilkinson says, "a Rotary convention is an event like no other", and this year's RI Convention is only going to be 450 miles away at the Los Angeles Convention Center. June 15-18, 2008 is just around the corner, so please take a look at the Convention Brochure available on the RI Website: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/c08_brochure.pdf.
