Nancy's Nuggets

As you are all aware, February is World Understanding Month, and we are fortunate to have in our midst, a possible upcoming international project which will continue to enhance our World Understanding. Our own pP Don Fultz has spearheaded the creation of a 3H Grant (Health, Hunger & Humanity), which was submitted to Rotary International last year. Because these grants are in the range of $100,000- $300,00, they are the most competitive grants and are quite an accomplishment for a club to achieve.

Our grant includes providing clean water (wells) and animal husbandry (goat raising) to the Batwa Pygmies, who live at the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Our own local Dr. Scott Kellermann, with the help of Rotary and others, has created a health clinic for the Batwa, and many of our fellow Rotarians have gone to Uganda to volunteer at Dr. Scott’s clinic. The picture in our Rotario is of Rotarian Piers (from France) who is visiting the various 3-H grant sites to evaluate our project. Very few 3-H applications ever get this far, so this is very encouraging. Here is what Dr. Scott said in an email to Don about Piers visit:

"Piers is here and we had a great visit at a Batwa settlement and he was obviously moved, he even danced with the Batwa! Things are going very well so far and I think that if there are no major glitches then I think that it will work out well, Piers loved being in the Bush. The Batwa have done a wonderful job so far asking the right questions and giving the right answers when asked. Wish you were here."

We are so fortunate to have a Rotarian like Don who is willing to do the work in putting a grant together! Thank you, Don! We look forward to Rotary International saying YES to our 3-H grant for the Batwa!

And on a more local note, we've got 12 books for far for the Mountain of Books; please bring a children’s book to our meeting on Thursday. And your auction items – work on them!
