Our Radio Auction is now in full swing! If you don’t have your Donation Kit for this year, please see Carolyn Inglis, Jeff Wenzel or Gary Gustafson. Fax those donations to the number listed on the donation form, and drop any gift certificates into the basket that will be in the foyer of the National Hotel at each of our meetings. If you are having a moment of ‘chicken-hood’ about asking for a donation, think of the kids and young adults who come to our club and thank us for their scholarships – it means a lot to them.

Our esteemed pP David Kenitzer is bringing us our program this week – Financial Safety While Traveling by Michael Behn. Michael has spoken at several of the other Rotary Clubs in our area and gets rave reviews, so don’t miss this one!

As part of Rotary Awareness Month (January), here is a fact that all Rotarians should know – the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a partnership with RI. The Rotary Foundation has received a $100 million grant from the Gates Foundation, which will be spent in direct support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, an organization that is spearheaded by the World Health Organization, RI, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF. The grant was announced in November and is one of the largest grants ever given by the Gates Foundation and the largest grant received by Rotary in its 102-year history. Rotary will distribute the funds through the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

Polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since 1985, with $633 million contributed to the effort. Although the initiative has slashed the number of polio cases by 99% over the past two decades, the wild poliovirus still persists in four countries: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. This grant from the Gates Foundation will help eradicate the disease that once devastated a thousand lives a day.

2008 Radio Auction: Save the date! This year's Radio Auction is set for Saturday, March 29.
2008 District Conference: The District Conference is coming! The District Conference is the culmination of what the 53 Rotary clubs in our district accomplish. And this Rotary year, we will all come together on May 1-4, 2008 at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno to discuss, celebrate, and plan for the future! Registration and details about the Conference are already available on the District Website.
99th Annual Rotary International Convention: As RI President Wilf Wilkinson says, "a Rotary convention is an event like no other", and this year's RI Convention is only going to be 450 miles away at the Los Angeles Convention Center. June 15-18, 2008 is just around the corner, so please take a look at the Convention Brochure available on the RI Website: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/c08_brochure.pdf.
