This Thursday is our Foundation Dinner at
the Stonehall in the Miners Foundry. Therefore,
we will not be meeting at the National Hotel at 12:15.
Dinner Cocktails begin at 5:30; the program starts at 6:00.
We are all urged to be on time and in our seats by 6:00. PE
Bob Buhlis will be our Sergeant at Arms at the dinner.
We are looking forward to celebrating our Paul Harris Fellows,
enjoying fellowship with the other clubs in the area, and hearing
from a Rotary World Peace Scholar: Shai
Tamari.
Shai was born and raised in Jerusalem and served in the Israeli
army. He earned his Bachelor’s in Journalism from the
Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia;
and a Master’s in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from
the University of London. He is currently a Rotary World Peace
Fellow at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, studying
for a Master’s in History, along with Arabic and Conflict
Resolution. Due to graduate in May 2008, Shai intends to find
a position with a government or an international organization,
focused on finding political solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. See you there!
At our meeting last week, Past District Governor Bob
Dorr and fellow Rotarian Jim Buckley
from the Cameron Park Club explained a project in the Philippines
that their club and others in the District are supporting. Money
is being raised to build a floating library and medical clinic
to support a community of people who live primarily on the water.
There are few roads to support this community which suffers
from poverty and is in need of services. The government of the
Philippines will support the library and clinic once the boat
has been completed. International Chair Stacie Hart
and Club Service Chair Cathy Wilcox-Barnes
will be taking a closer look at this project and making a recommendation
to us.
Ralf Swenson, Superintendent of the Nevada
Joint Union High School District, will be speaking at our meeting
on November 15th. He will give us an overview of Career/Technical
education opportunities in our county. This will be our second
program on the state of education in our county. Please come
out to hear Ralf.
