Steve Eubanks from the Forest Service (and
Pete Brost’s former boss) gave us a very
informative and sobering presentation about the recent Angora
fire in the Tahoe National Forest at our last meeting. Steve’s
pictures of the destruction were absolutely haunting; however,
he did have pictures of unharmed houses sitting in the middles
of complete devastation. His message was that this can happen
here and that creating defensible space is essential and does
work! He also mentioned the Fire Safe Council which provides
resources for our county – chipping service as well as
home and grounds ‘audit’ for fire safety. Thank
you, Steve!
Our program this week is Nancy Webber, from
NID who will be giving us an update on What
Is Currently Going On At the Nevada Irrigation District.
“If not us, WHO? If not now, WHEN?” Huh?
We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really live a tenet
of the 4-Way Test – Does it build goodwill and better
friendships? On Sunday, October 21st at
5:00 at the Nevada City Elks Lodge, OUR newly formed
Rotaract Club will be celebrating its charter.
Governor Vic Slaughter will be in attendance
as well as Rotarians from all the Area 4 Rotary Clubs. This
is our chance to support and get to know some of the fine young
men and women who are the future of Rotary. David assures me
that there will be no heavy metal music and that we won’t
have to do any dancing. So, let’s have a good club turnout!
Our District Governor, Vic Slaughter and his
wife Kathie will be visiting our club on October
25th. Vic will meet with the board before our club
meeting, then later address us all. One of the traditions in
our club is for the District Governor to award the Quiet
Rotarian award during his visit. A Quiet Rotarian is
an individual who exemplifies the values of Rotary and who contributes
to club activities quietly and without the need of fanfare.
Board members can be nominated for Quiet Rotarian. In the past,
the Board members have selected this individual, but this year
we thought we’d get input from our club members. If you
would like to nominate an individual please give your nominee’s
name to any board member or send me an email at nhkemp@comcast.net.
