As of Wednesday morning, I counted almost $16,000 in donations to the Radio Auction on our website. That's a little less than 50% of what we need to meet this year's budget for youth activities. I think that's a pretty good start. The Radio ads on KNCO just started last week, and we have about three more weeks to round up the rest of the donations. I will be interested in what gets reported today. i have two donors left to contact for $500 and I am sure that many of you do also.

As fate would have it, my wife's hairdresser called as I was writing this column and I asked her if she would donate $250 worth of services to the Auction. She had never been asked before! Not only is she donating a full hair color, styling, cut, manicure, pedicure, etc. She asked if her husband, a professional photographer, could donate a $280 photography setting. Now, I know that not all merchants are as easy as this, but all we have to do is ask the people we do business with every day. Let them know that 100% of the auction proceeds will go to our Youth Projects.

This year's Auction Committee has been working hard to make our job easier. Each year, the procedures get refined, and the donors are getting more recognition for their contributions. This year, the 8-page tabloid-sized circular in The Union will give the people of Nevada County a good idea of how we are using the dollars they pay for the auction items to benefit the youth of the community. I think this will help increase the percentage we get for the items.

As I mentioned last week, your Board of Directors selected Jim Ciaffoni as January's Rotarian of the Month. Jim has been toiling behind the scenes to receive all the faxed donation forms and send them along to their destinations. Jim will see $200 added to his Paul Harris account.

  Club News

Rotary Youth Exchange: Our club has agreed to sponsor a RYE student from our area (outbound). With this sponsorship comes an opportunity to assume responsibility for a young ambassador (inbound) from another country. At this time, we don’t know from what country this young person will arrive, nor do we know the age or gender. All we do know is that a student between the ages of 16 to 18 1/2 years will have the experience of spending 10-12 months in our community. Nancy Kemp and her husband (Steve) have already agreed to be one of the host families -- we need 4 more families! Each family will be expected to house and care for our student for a period of about 3 months and the other family will be our contingency family. We can further international goodwill and understanding as well as becoming closer together as Rotarian families as we support this individual. If you're interested, you are invited to an informal get together at Nancy's home on February 21 from 6:00-7:30 PM. Appetizers and refreshments will be served while we tell you about the program and the responsibilities required of a host family.
Flag Display: The club has a new display for the many flags / banners that members have brought back from Rotary clubs all over the world. Since we haven't had anything to display them on, they seem to be scattered and stored hither and yon. If you have any around, please bring them to the meetings and give them to JoAnne Conley. She is attaching them to the new display and we will then have an unveiling at a meeting in the future.
9th Annual Radio Auction: This year's Radio Auction is coming up on March 25 and will be broadcast over KNCO 830AM from 9:00am until 2:00pm. Radio ads began on Monday, so be sure to get your Gold Level Donations of $250 or more back to the Radio Auction Committee as soon as possible to maximize the number of ads your donors are in. To make submitting items easier for the members, the Committee has setup a fax line: (530) 687-9717. Once you have the "Item Donation Form" filled out, you can either fax it or bring it to the regular club meetings. The Radio Auction Committee is also excited about the tabloid-sized circular that will be inserted into The Union on March 20. This will not only list all of the items of $100 or higher, but will also include stories and pictures about our club's service in the community.
