The Crown's Corner

Last week was all Rotary.

We had our annual visit from the District Governor, Dave Bianchi. Our board met with him for two hours before the membership meeting ... and I think he was impressed with the work of our club.

Our meeting was highlighted by the induction of new member Brent Daggett. That's the third new member so far this year or one each month. We are on track to meet our goal of at least 10 new members this year. The board has approved a fourth, but are waiting for our membership chair John "Red" Burke to do the orientation before the name is submitted to the club for approval (How's that for putting the pressure on?). I know that we have some other prospective members out there, let me know if we should be submitting their names to the board next Monday. And also, let me or one of the board members know if you have any recommendations for our "September Rotarian of the Month". As always, all members (especially new members) are encouraged to attend these meetings.

It was great to see the shock on Jeff Wenzel's face when he learned that he was named "The Quiet Rotarian". Our board had no trouble in selecting Jeff for this honor. We are looking forward to his push again this year to help the Radio Auction. 100% of the net proceeds from the Radio Auction have been designated by the board for our youth projects this year. This will help each of us when we solicit items for the auction. It may even encourage buyers to bid a little more when they learn that 100% of their dollars are going to the youth of Nevada County. The Auction Committee is off to a great start. I attended their kickoff meeting this week and was impressed with their dedication to this major fundraiser.

Several of us traveled to Sacramento to hear Carl-Wilheim Stennhammar, the RI President, and mingle with the Rotary leaders from our zone. Our own Dave Denney was in-charge of entertainment (Can you guess what he chose?).

I forgot an important item last week (maybe more that I don't remember). I had passed out flyers on Jim Harrington's Celebration of Life and then forgot to pick them up. So I will doing the same thing again today...please make sure I pick them up I need to RSVP by October 3rd.

Breaking News

As you may know, the five Area 4 Rotary Clubs are coming together under the leadership of Matt Weaver to collect much needed items for victims of the recent hurricanes. You probably noticed the full-page ads in The Union indicating certain drop off points in the County. There is a need for cash donations and for particular items that are listed here by highest priority:

1. Household cleaning supplies
2. Canned goods
3. Hygiene products - shampoo, toothbrush, toilet paper, etc
4. Baby products - pacifiers, baby bottles, formula, baby wipes
5. Diapers - children and adult
6. Children's books
7. Children's toys (new or gently used, please!)
8. Underwear - Men's 46-48, Women's up to 3X (new only!)
9. Blankets
10. Towels
11. Mattresses and pillows
12. Socks - all sizes (new only!)
13. Clothes (new or nearly new)

Volunteers are also needed to receive goods at one of the drop off sites during th week, and also to pack boxes on Saturday, October 1st. Drop off sites are:

  • The Union - 464 Sutton, GV
  • The Farm Store - 10110 Harvest Lane, PV
  • Weaver Auto, 520 E. Main, GV
  • Plaza Tire (both locations) 531 Searls, NC & 17317 Penn Valley Dr., PV
  • Citizens Bank, LOP

Cash donations are being accepted at all Citizen's Bank locations. Checks should be made payable to "Rotary Hurricane Relief Effort Fund". There was a suggestion that some of the necessary items can be purchased at one of our local dollar stores for ... well ... $1 each! Go and take a look.

This drive is to be intense over the next three weeks. Let's kick off Nevada City's effort with both cash and "stuff"! Contact your friends, neighbors and business associates and fill some boxes with the needed supplies and take to the drop off sites on your way to the meeting on Thursday. Dump out your piggy bank and bring some cash to the meeting, there will be a collection.

Unless we have lived through something like this, none of us can imagine how these people are suffering. They must feel so hopeless and helpless. Many thousands have been displaced from the comfort and safety of their homes. Let's show them what Rotarian's can do! Thanks everyone!

Rock Creek BBQ: Our annual trip to Rock Creek will be on Oct 11 from approximately 10:30 - 1:00. This is a great event, where 7th/8th graders in the leadership program are paired with disabled students for a field trip. If you want to volunteer to help, contact Bonnie Murphey.
Celebration of Life: Jim Harrington's Celebration of Life will be held at the Miners Foundry on Oct 28 at 5:00pm. Please RSVP with Prez Fultzee before Oct 3.
Foundation Dinner: The annual Area 4 Foundation Dinner will be held at the Nevada City Elks Lodge on Nov 2. Al Frumpkin, a very popular speaker on the Rotary Circuit, will be the keynote speaker.
Sierra Services for the Blind: This year's annual event is now called "Party Hearty with Jimmy Accardi" and will be held on Nov 18 at the Grass Valley Vets Building. All members will be required to sell four tickets to this event. At only $5 per ticket, we should be able to average much higher than that!
Attendence Report: In July, 99.11% of members attended or made-up; in August, we dropped slightly to 91.89%.
